The title, The Second Explodes, refers amongst others to an explosion of activities which will take place within a short time. Apparently fleeting encounters (between artworks/public/artists) which can be experienced as a concentration of events. An explosion of events that will commence in each a stream of associations. Next to showing existing artworks the main starting point for the artists will be to create site-specific work and there will also be performances. The Second Explodes is a happening. There will be film, performance, drawings, paintings, installations and sound. And don’t miss the ARTWALK! 2012Uncommitted Crime Quartair Contemporary Art Initiatives The Hague, Netherlands Bullet-proof skin, parasitic textiles, real spiders and a work of art that enters zones of illegality. Quartair opens the season with an exhibition that puts the visitor to the test: "Uncommitted Crime, how art and biotech affect us". Uncommitted Crime shows works that have never been on display in The Hague before: contemporary art that owes its existence, directly or indirectly, to recent technological and scientific developments. The artists in the exhibition are working with scientists, put our gut feelings to the test and reflect critically on what (bio-) technological developments mean for our bodies and lives. Participating artists: Stijn Belle (NL), Jalila Essaidi (NL), Sara Martin Mazorra (NL), Art Orienté Objet (Fra), Dorith Sjardijn (NL), Art van Triest (NL), Soyo Lee (ROK), René Jansen (EN), Adam Zaretsky (USA). Exhibition A free interpretation of the famous theorem of the philosopher Theodor Adorno, 'Every work of art is an uncommitted crime' is the context of the exhibition. A crime can be seen as more than just his negative definition. Taking into account that rules, norms and laws are always context dependent, crime opens the opportunity to defy the social norm. The works in this exhibition test the limits of what is currently socially acceptable. It is for the viewer to judge whether the 'crime' is or is not committed. Stijn Belle presents his DNA Immunity Centre, a project which can provide the visitor anonymity by distributing his or her DNA as much as possible. Jalila Essaidi explored together with scientists whether it is possible to make our skin bulletproof by combining spider silk with human skin tissue. The spiders will be present at the exhibition. Sara Martin Mazorra graduated this year from the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. With her delicate embroidery she parasites orchids and then encapsulate them for eternity. Art of Triest finds the limits of our legal system with a 3D printed Kalashnikov. The gun consists of three separate parts. When they at intervals come together an illegal moment is created.
