I think of art as something capable of unfolding a complexity that makes reality resist being fully understood. Or, put another way, I am interested in art when it allows us to handle what would otherwise be unmanageable. I’m thinking, for example, of rhetorical figures and their ability to turn language against itself, against its literality, like turning a sock inside out with the little bobbles on the outside. A paradox, for instance, shows us the seams of language that both enable and prevent, at the same time, a truthful account. In this sense, I think art does to the world what rhetorical figures do to language. Perhaps for this reason my work always gets muddied in the study of language and knowledge, as well as in narrativity and that fine line between what we call fiction and what we call reality. My research takes shape in multiple formats, from installation to performance, performative lecture, artist’s book, audio guide, and text.
