An unexpected combination of two elements that rarely coexist. A 19th-century Japanese porcelain Imari charger combined with sleek, contemporary polished metal mirrors, integrated to form something more remarkable than the sum of its parts.

By crafting a physical manifestation of the smeared trail we see when an object moves faster than our brain can process I encourage viewers to reflect on the perception of movement, highlighting the intricate relationship between reality, and artistic expression.

Illustrating the paradoxical relationship between creation and destruction with a reversed performance video of a Billy bookcase being dismantled. In the original footage, the bookcase is destroyed, but when the video is played in reverse, it visually appears as if the bookcase is being constructed. This reversal creates a visual representation of how destruction can be perceived as creation when viewed from a different perspective.

A large Concave shape showing reflection and absorption and a given amount of steps in between. These steps are the ratio between absorption and reflection, scientifically called albedo. Albedo is measured on a scale from 0, corresponding to a black body that absorbs all light, to 1, corresponding to a body that reflects all light.

Half a century ago, NASA sent Voyagers I & II into space carrying gold-plated records with images and audio, intended to be universally understandable. Currently, they are 20 billion km away from Earth with a message we cannot change. As I child I was obsessed with this ‘universal message’ explaining who we are. I decided to create my own from an artist’s point of view. In my opinion, IKEA’s iconic wordless assembly instructions of the iconic ‘Billy’ bookcase, designed to be understood regardless of language and culture, is the quintessential universal language. What could possibly tell other species more about us?

My "Burning-bookcase" contains a small selection of books that have been banned or burned in the past and the present. The holographic fire looks disturbingly real but does not harm the books. Just try to get used to the sight of it, until it’s no more than a pleasant fire.

Mirror festival binnenhofbuiten The Hague, Netherlands thehague.com/partners/nl/news/een-spectaculaire-nieuwe-installatie-bij-de-gevangenpoort-laat-het-spiegelfestival Once the entrance to the Binnenhof (Inner Court) and later infamous as the De Witt Brothers' prison, artist Feddow Claassen replaces this ancient history with a new perspective. Using aluminum plates applied all around, he creates an effect reminiscent of funhouse mirrors, where the convex and concave curves distort the image. Visitors see themselves and their surroundings as tall and thin, or short and broad, adding a playful twist to the historical monumentality.

Reina Zijlstra www.bijzonderecollecties.uva.nl finished
