Sublimate: to reshape an instinct into culture / to transform from solid to gas, whilst never becoming liquid Still drawings taken from a larger animation show two moments in the production of fish glue (vislijm), used in art conservation to repair paper. Derived from an endangered species, fish glue embodies a balancing act between environmental and cultural heritages. Here, each transient twelfth-of-a-second is solidified onto paper, the very substance which then implicates the fish’s transformation from living matter into material.

Installation shot from 'The Sea I Breathe', Troef Leiden. Land-letting is a series of fish glue casts of a Dutch waterscape painting, in which the disappearing landscape is captured as a trace. Pigment from the original painting is absorbed and suspended in the glue, with each cast becoming a process of subtraction from the original painting. Casting as an ongoing negation of the original painting is for me a way of engaging with questions of authenticity, originality and authorship, as much in making paintings as in the constructed nature of Dutch landscapes themselves.

Annabel Quick works in painting and installation to explore the visual poetry of conservation, both cultural and ecological.

Annabel Quick (2000, London) is a recent graduate of Fine Arts at KABK. Her practice has engaged with sites and materials embedded with ambiguity, such as fish glue, a material made from endangered fish species that is used to conserve paintings, and the dunes depicted (and ultimately changed through this depiction) by Hendrik Mesdag's panorama. Through microcosms such as these, she is attentive to ordinary moments and materials in which cultural and environmental heritages are weighed against each other. She is curious about the objects of the past and the labour they imply for the future, and works to ask if decay can also be a form of material agency, and if images and objects have the right to perpetuity.
