Matevž Čebašek

I am a visual storyteller working with photography, film, and text. Memory, the human condition, and the medium of photography are the most prevailing interests in my long-term projects. My work continually looks at connections between past, present and future. Within each project, I explore different perspectives, both conceptually and materially. Not being limited to one visual style allows me to develop my conceptual ideas to their full potential and enables me to gain a deeper understanding of the medium of photography itself. I often work with a combination of documentary photography, archival material, and text. My most recent work is an autoethnographic exploration of the unreliability of memory on the example of two cases of dementia in my family. By bringing together different perspectives, I question the importance of personal memories and histories. I am showing that memories and institutionalized histories are subjective and constantly changing. With my work, I want people to start looking at things beyond one side of the story by introducing multi-layered realities. I want the audience to engage with the topics by rethinking and reflecting on them.
