![A Body of Water]( "A Body of Water")
infoSeeing and experiencing the installation requires the visitor to bow their heads to the lowered ceiling for entering a secluded space. This intimacy is necessary to share what drives her, and overcome life’s volatility. Video images, miniatures and the surrounding cardboard all merge. In A body of water, an undercurrent seeps in through the cardboard walls and acts as a trigger. The ingress of moisture into the walls represents my physical response to changes at the micro level. It is a mirror for what is happening outside and what we are made so hyper-aware of by all the media exposure. Video images, miniatures and the surrounding cardboard all merge. Cardboard is a poor material that activates Jemima's almost naïve urge in me to make precise and clear-cut miniatures that are rich in details and expression. The cardboard also acts as a vulnerable body for both the miniatures and the large space. Like a shell for the fleeting stories. "As unsuspecting visitors, we stepped into a different world, a world made of cardboard, enveloped in subdued light. Before our eyes unfolded a paper spectacle of everyday life: seemingly simple, yet palpably complex and filled with absurd and wondrous details. With 'A Body of Water,' Jemima has constructed a rabbit hole for the spectator. Penetrating into it, the jury found themselves in a Wonderland. As we moved from room to room in this ever-expanding diorama, we were pulled into an overwhelming total experience. Through a delicately crafted choreography, 'A Body of Water' seamlessly transforms the viewer from spectator to participant, engaging us in a silent metamorphosis." -Stiching Jan Roëde

"It makes me feel very big and very small at the same time"
Jemima de Jonge is an interdisciplinary artist, who uses immersive film installations to merge her drawings, sculptures, installations, and performances into one gesture. With a cultivated naiveness she blends the physical with the virtual and miniature into real size, creating alienating experiences.
The constant personal interplay between the need for control and a longing for surrender has an unavoidable influence on her work. It's a never-ending search for the ungraspable moment when things collide, where friction and uncertainty occur and harmony becomes painful. Her vision is to bring back curiosity in people who seem to have lost it. In which a particular sense of humour plays a significant role.
In response to the amount of hyper-intellectual art, Jemima strives to create experiences and stories where her references, inspirations, personal experiences and commentary are so intricately interwoven with the work that you can feel them without needing to point them out. Additionally, with the bond created by the viewers' physical relationship with the artwork, she aims to bring you closer to your emotional reactions and role in the piece. Often questioning her own and the audience's sense of self.
A small incident can trigger the unfolding of an entire inner world. Minute details and the work as a whole, then start to interact intimately. The perspectives and rhythms vary constantly. They blend into a dance that gives the visitor an almost cinematic experience, inviting them to immerse completely in the work
In her videos, Jemima performs multiple roles. She uses her body as a messenger of emotions, stories, and ideas. Central to this is the interaction between the individual and the mass, both of which she embodies. Simultaneously zooming in on details and being overwhelmed by the whole.
Her meticulously created world is based on reality, sometimes serving as an escape, at other times expressing longing, and often offering humoristic commentary.

2025Walltalks Atelier Arthur Rogiers Brussels, Belgium Atelier Arthur Rogiers is a project and exhibition space in Brussels for experimental film and video. Upon entering this exhibition, each visitor is offered a cardboard mask/costume, through which Jemima invites the viewer into her cardboard world. The tactile quality of the cardboard forms a bridge to the rest of her work, installed at Atelier Arthur Rogiers, where her video projections extend the already existing atmospheric living space. Stories in which Jemima often plays a character herself are set in rooms, streets, hallways, and surreal sets, created using scale models. To her, these spaces in her work feel as if you are inside a body. Does this evoke a longing for maternal security, a claustrophobic sensation, or something in between? www.atelierarthurrogiers.be/calendar/expo-walltalks Solo

These seem to offer the wanderer guidance through strange situations. Passing by windows, peeping into a world we cannot reach.
