Mila Narjollet's work investigates the present and future of interspecies communication in the age of the human apocalypse.

The end of things is dissipated through the fiber of human life. It runs within our genes, and throughout all living matter. It is written in the constitutive code of the universe. It is spread in one form or another through many religions. It has seeped into fictional cultural manifestations, often as a prediction or a warning of some awe-some end of life as we know it. Visions of climate catastrophes, biological mutations and alien encounters flood the screen and page. Speculation on the so-called fate of humanity and the universe have a long and rich past. But as we acquire tools that can look more closely at the past and further into the cosmos, as we wage more violent conflicts and further de-stabilize our home climates, as we acquire the power of nanotechnology while simultaneously provoking changes on a planetary scale, speculation on the seemingly inevitable End takes on a primary importance in this, the twenty-first century. Simultaneously, as we deepen our research into the liveliness of the world around us, see Lovelock, Tsing, Pepperberg, we recognize that without the eyes and ears of the species that populate the universe, we are perceiving only a fragment of it. And we have imposed this fragment onto all living things as self-proclaimed gods. So when we speculate on "the end of the world," whose world are we talking about? When we assume that once the world becomes uninhabitable for us it will die, how much are we blinded from? Through academic research into Posthumanism, Interspecies Interconnection and Politics of Care, Narjollet takes on the speculative exercise of inventing possibilities for the human species outside established hierarchies. She likes to create parallels between the mediums she uses and the fabric of the human world - can we use what is in our hands to create tools for looking and for listening and for learning? Ultimately, she seeks to understand the root of the catastrophic imagery that colors the twentieth century and how it can help us decipher new ways to look at the finality of things, living and non-living. When we talk about the end of the world, who's world are we imagining? And can we think beyond it through learning? What can our vital surroundings teach us about life and death?

Safe Space for Stupid Ideas Waterkant Bunker The Hague, Netherlands www.instagram.com/safespaceforstupidideas/ Safe Space for Stupid Ideas is a program for young artists and musicians in The Hague and surroundings to come show work that is at an experimental stage. Me and two co-organizers host these creators at the Waterkant bunker so they can test their ideas and concepts with large and diverse audiences. Our project focuses on dissolving the boundaries between viewer and maker as well as subverting the challenges that young artists face in the professional art world.
