2022Do you feel like you’re in the eye of a hurricane? NIDA. Meeting Photography Nida, Lithuania Artists and photographers were invited to submit lens-based works to explore the theme of “Do you feel like you’re in the eye of a hurricane?”. How has the world changed in the time of quarantine and after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine? It seems that everything calmed down, or at least we’ve got used to the situation surrounding us. The information flow from the east is constant, quarantine restrictions are off and travelling is easier again. But is it really calmer? Is it really over? Maybe we’re in a temporary calm – like in the eye of a hurricane. After some time, will chaos erupt again? How will the situation in the world mark the future of photographic storytelling, and how differently will we read pictures in the future? www.photography.lt/en/symposium/nida-2022_2654/projection-nights/16th_2717.html Group

I saw a tree bearing stones in the place of apples and pears Various cities in the Netherlands, Poland, Ireland, UK and Belgium, Netherlands www.emiliamartin.com/i-saw-a-tree-bearing-stones-in-the-place-of-apples-and-pears/project-images.html Meteorites, boulders, rocks, stones A child-like obsession that began innocently, fueled with curiosity: What stories does a rock whisper? Ancient mythology is filled with cautionary tales where young, eloquent females were punished for their outspokenness and turned into rocks. A curse of Medusa meant that she transformed anyone she looked at into a rock: mute, passive, motionless and unable to express. Some rocks were believed to be gods, chained to the ground in case they decided to make a return to heavens; celebrated, feared. Some took on central roles in the communities becoming places of worship, grief, sacrifice. For over two years I have been collecting rock stories. Many of them belong to folk people, such as my ancestors: collectively woven myths that gave ground to caring rituals of relating to space, the land, to one another. Over time these stories fluctuate, gently passed for generations. The longer I give in to my obsession, the more I begin to believe that a rock is not mute at all, but perhaps, the most excellent storyteller of them all. I saw a tree bearing stones in the place of apples and pears is an exploration of a rock as a carrier of stories, a migratory body, a silent, mysterious visitor, filled with projections, dreams and fears. It is an investigation of the myths, stories and rituals and an act of reclaiming them back.

The Blue of the far distance Various cities in the Netherlands and Poland, Netherlands www.emiliamartin.com/the-blue-of-the-far-distance/project-images.html The MA graduation project was realised during a year, with the use of the medium format film camera, painting and collage techniques in various locations in the Netherlands and Poland. It involved images, poetry and live poetry readings connected with stargazing as well as the exhibition. The research of the project is published in the form of a self published and self distributed book under the same name. Project description: I looked up towards the stars ever since I remember. I am not an astronomer - while I can barely name a few constellations and sometimes I confuse satellites for the celestial bodies, stargazing brought me comfort whenever life felt too narrow and patriarchal systems I inhabited were too oppressive. In times of capitalism and its symptomatic fetish of light, in “The blue of the far dis- tance” I explore the act of stargazing as a tool of gentle emancipation, of accessing space that represents connectedness, belonging and wonder regardless of binary narratives in place, location or systems inhabited. These questions followed me while I visited amateur observatories where light pollution was too strong to see anything on the sky above, or hand crafted plane- tariums – some of them in impressive domes, some built in private living rooms, some built on farms, in sheds. Inspired by the notion of hand crafted planetariums I wonder what it means to create a contained universe of one’s own, on one’s own terms in the most literal sense. “The blue of the far distance” is a hopeful speculation about the place of positive es- cape accessible and democratically available, a constellation of stargazers, of dark- nesses and surreal landscapes, of ancient orreries and universes in a human scales, a clash between mundane and sublime.

The Third Eye Royal Academy of the Art, The Hague Den Haag, Netherlands www.mixcloud.com/mushroomradio/ A monthly feminist podcast / radio show on the Mushroom Radio run and hosted by Emilia Martin, Petra Kroon and Sophie Allerding. The third eye is the concept of a speculative invisible eye, which provides perception beyond ordinary sight. The third eye refers to the gate that leads to the inner realms and spaces of higher consciousness. Make it what you want, we will use it to have a closer look on visual culture through feminist lens. We, photography students, really bothered by patriarchy, are having a lot of conversations about how visual culture in combination with patriarchy faces us in our daily and “professional” lives and futures. With this show we hope to expand our conversation with other students, or even outside the academy.

Far from here, where darkness lies Various cities in the Netherlands, Netherlands www.emiliamartin.com/far-from-here-where-darkness-lies/project-images.html The project is a first chapter of the bigger, MA work “The blue of the far distance”. It has been created with the use of medium format film photography, printing techniques and collage cutting techniques, both digital and manual. It has been exhibited as part of the PHMuseum Days 2021 festival and part of the Noorderlicht festival in Groningen. It won the Fotofilmic Journal award and was published on the cover and in the magazine no 9 in 2021. Project description: In September 2020 I packed my suitcases and drove West, heading to my new home in the Netherlands. After a long drive, around midnight, I saw a glow spreading over the landscape, looking just like it was a sunrise. As it turned out, my tired senses were fooled by the biggest glasshouse colony in the world – a glow that tricked not only me, but the entire natural world. We live in times when majority of people have never experienced the view of the Milky way. As the urban legend goes, in 1994, during a major blackout in Los Angeles, citizens were so disturbed by the view of unfamiliar clear sky and Milky way that they started calling 911. As a civilisation we perceive darkness as a threat. We associate it with blindness, fear, mystery, something out of control. These negative associations create fundaments for the reality where the levels of light pollution raises fastest in the history of the Earth. Levels of melatonin in blood gets dangerously low, species crucial for the ecosystem die out and starry nights are no longer present in our lives. By loosing starry nights, we have also lost something very human: a feeling of interconnectedness that directly affects our psychology and behaviours. My first experience of starry nights brings the feelings of nostalgia and childhood memories. The project has started as an investigation of light pollution, but became a personal story of looking for what's almost lost. It's a story of fears to be tamed, of a primal desire to get closer to something universal, bigger than myself, and hope that the narrative can be turned around. It is not light that makes us see, and darkness that makes us blind.

Twofold Den Haag, Netherlands www.emiliamartin.com/twofold/project-images.html The project was realised over six months with the use of the medium format film camera and collage techniques in the Hague, Netherlands. It was published as the zine funded and distributed by the Royal Academy of the Art, Den Haag. Project description: I moved to a temporary sublet in Rijswijk in September 2020. I exchanged money and keys in the middle of the night after an eleven hours drive and suddenly found myself living in a flat full of very personal looking sculptures, drawings, photographs, postcards. A little mother Mary bottle by the bath, wild plants, melted candles. I was shopping in a grocery store, surely the same one that my landlady used for shopping. I painted my toenails with nail polish I found on the kitchen's floor. I felt that my presence filled some void, some identity that was already formed. I was renting not only her flat. After I moved out, we arranged a meeting in the house. While she was making tea for us, I was sitting quietly on the sofa, noticing every little thing that had changed. The rug on the wall, the Jesus picture, the plants – the house smelled differently. I was a guest there and it felt clear.I showed her the photographs and asked how she felt about them. She said “it's interesting, like somebody took my being and put it into another body, filled some gap” I knew exactly what she meant.

Like ivy, we grow Silesia, Poland www.emiliamartin.com/like-ivy-we-grow/project-images.html The project was realised over two years with the use of the medium format film camera in Poland, Silesia. The work won the All Out MTV award in 2021 and was exhibited on Times Square, New York, Munich Germany, Copenhagen (during Copenhagen Pride Month), in Lush store in Manchester, UK and was published in the WeSee Magazine. Project description: I met Magda in a hip hop dance class when we were still kids. A space so extravagant and unusual for girls growing up in the Eastern European culture of early post-communism, patriarchy, catholicism and pragmatism. She asked if I wanted her to see how she practiced spinning on her head.I remember standing there, staring in awe at Magda, majestically spinning on her head round and round, like all the norms and expectations preexisting for us disappeared, like they were never there in the first place. The coal mines, the male culture, the violence, men working in mines, men working as policemen, economic struggle, police violence - in that moment it all spinned round and round, blending in one long blur, a beautiful set of lines. This was the beginning of our friendship. Magda met Daria on instagram and they fell in love. I watched their love flourishing, spinning and twisting, inspiring with the lack of compromise, with the boldness and bravery to live and grow unapologetically, to grow, like ivy, in the landscape full of gray.

Venture Various cities in Poland, Poland www.emiliamartin.com/venture/project-images.html The project was realised over two years with the use of the medium format film camera in Poland and US. The work was exhibited in Galeria Centrala, Poznan and Galeria Chlodna 20, Warszawa. It was published in the book Sputnik no.08, Float Magazine, Analog Magazine and FemLens Magazine. Project description: As my old, paper dictionary states, the word “venture” means “to risk the loss”, but also “a form of adventure”, “to dare”. Overall, it suggests something that is risky and of an uncertain outcome. When I now think of the beginning of this story, I can’t imagine a better, more accurate word. I first pointed my camera at Beti, my much younger sister, when we took off for an adventure we dreamt of for years, an American road trip. She just turned eighteen and I turned twenty six, we felt adult and free with our freshly obtained driving licenses. We slept in the rental car on the Walmart parking lots, made sandwiches on the top of the grand canyon, drove for miles and miles without noticing a soul, gossiping, laughing, singing. Every now and then I insisted on stopping the car, inspired by the notion of the American road trip photography I documented canyons, gas stations, cars. When we returned back to our native Poland and I developed the images it became instantly clear that it wasn’t the images of scenic canyons that I wanted to look at, it was the lazy, intimate, comfortable moments of sisterhood we shared that were my most treasured discovery. It was not the end but the beginning of an adventure, a journey of sisters reconnecting. Beti guided me back to the complicated landscape of our family after years of my absence, and I guided her along the curved paths of entering adulthood. We became each other’s guides, carrying an old, sturdy camera along. We were two sisters gazing at one another, seeing some past and some future versions of the selves, Beti patiently waiting for me to press the button, me patiently waiting for the moment to arrive. “Venture” is the story of the point in between, the place where we met and connected.
