Zachte Drempel is the first solo exhibition by The Hague based artist Catelijne Boele. After receiving the Stroom Pro Invest grant, Boele deepened her practice by focusing on a new series of large-scale oil paintings, which have continued to evolve into sculptural elements. These works are a reflection of a dream world, inspired by her recent bird-watching experiences. “The paintings, with their soft transitional moments, seem to mirror the shifts in my own life – becoming vibrant layers of colour, interwoven with layers of longing, fantasy and a deeper memory of loss.” Documentation: Emilia Martin

Birdwatching hides have intrigued me over the past year; they allow the birdwatcher to come closer to the birds while becoming invisible themselves - blending into the colours of the landscape. This tension between visibility and invisibility, and the attempt to come closer through disappearance, has been important for the development of these dreamlike structures. These gentle apparitions have become soft, safe capsules, which invite visitors to temporarily dissolve. Shown at Museum Beelden aan Zee during After Hours with Rat Radio and Dooorp Documentation: Anca Bârjovanu

The diptych “Songs between the trees & When the flowers start their humming” explores the human subconscious from an emotionally sensitive point of experience. The titles refer to natural elements, such as trees and flowers which start their humming and singing. Hence the human mind takes on a metaphorical and intuitive form, in this overall construction of dreamlike and natural elements.

In my practice I question how memories transform into their own being, how they develop through time and are in constant interaction with imagination. The body of work I developed during my residency at Taidetila Muijala, was made with the old granary storage in mind; a very atmospheric space with little daylight. Each painting contains parts of buildings, structures and objects from my memories. Even though a building is in need of a stable construction in order to be functional, a memory is often unstructured and inevitably changing through time. The connection between these two elements has intrigued me during my process and resulted in a series of paintings, which were partly integrated into a sculptural work. These vitrines hold the soundscape created for the exhibition Netting and Waiting, which interweaves recorded conversations with women of Scheveningen and the sounds of their environment - the harbor, the singing of net-making women, the waves, and the seagulls. Installed in these specially designed vitrines, alongside the net-making needles (Boetnaalden), the soundscape seeks to create a fleeting connection between the past and present of craft-based labor. Vitrines created in collaboration with Elina Alekseeva Technical assistance: Sjuul Joosen Support sound design: Christine Hvidt Documentation: Anke van den Berg Shown as part of the exhibition Netting and Waiting, curated by Catelijne Boele and Elina Alekseeva For a full overview of the exhibition visit: https://www.seelab.nl/program/2024/nettingandwaiting Special thanks to the women of Scheveningen who shared their stories, MuZee Scheveningen for lending the historical objects, and Stroom Den Haag for their financial support.

KABK Graduation Project: I don’t feel the water anymore As sweat drips Down my back It is relentless It does not care Who I am And that is why It pushes and pulls My legs My feet Do I swim or dance? Scream With joy or anger As I am Shaped Shifted Crumbled, tumbled Falling, Down Down Down we go The maelstrom is a natural disaster. A whirlpool in the ocean, which pulls every object, human or creature of the sea, down to the bottom. It maintains its existence through constant movement; swirling and relentlessly moving water, spiraling down into the sea. Objects and creatures caught by its overwhelming power, shift in appearance; growing longer legs, or becoming estranged images to human perception, while shaping and shifting in form. The phenomenon symbolizes the overwhelming feeling of being out of control. As the spiraling water is so powerful, there is no use in resisting. Only in surrendering; going down with the elements and everything else that gets caught in its movement. Hoping for the best, while the water pushes and pulls relentlessly.
