’Ways of Landmaking’ asks what if we treat ourselves as land whose gestures are being harvested? For centuries the gestures of cows, farmers and the soil made landscapes into the lush meadows we are slowly but surely ceasing to admire. Massive transitions in our food systems will retire their bodies and welcome a new historic chapter of “land-building”. But our bodies, and the gestures with which we used to imagine and design our lives with the land have been largely displaced by technologies. How can we retrieve these gestures that our bodies no longer perform? How can we learn new ones?

In this participatory audiovisual performance, visitors are encouraged to readout various English language texts into a microphone. A machine learning model tries to classify and categorize their voice, tonality and accent in an attempt to produce a speech profile for every word uttered. At the same time, the performer(s) hacks into various inaccessible online archives and databases in an attempt to retrieve accent and speech related materials. A live audiovisual composition created through archival and machine learning imaginations.

Ocean Bloom is an environmental narrative stimulated by the idea of one being trapped in a sonic storm , a giant circular whirl in the depths of the ocean. The audiovisual experience employs sonic allegory as a narrative tool to present an encounter between the biophony and the anthrophony of the North Sea, creating a new space for dialogue and understanding. A site-specific, spatio temporal composition of light and sound which explores the politics and practices of listening to more-than-human worlds.

Ocean Bloom @ v2_Lab Snippet (Binaural) :info
This is a snippet from Ocean Bloom Tryday exhibition at v2_Lab for Unstable Media, Rotterdam on 23rd of July, 2021. The soundscape is based on the theme : Disturbance as a creative force. The focus is on the possibility of uncomfortable sounds or ‘disturbances’ to overcome the human/non-human dichotomy. Uncomfortable sounds are just not noise, they refer to unpleasant events and affective situations that result as disturbing or uncanny, even when they are not exactly accounted as noisy. Man made underwater sonic events such as sonar pulses, turbine motors, airguns etc. are spatialized and moved in an arrangement of speakers as audience explore a volumetric sound space.

This is a snippet form Interference 53°N,42°E exhibitted at See Lab, The Hague in July 2020. The tension charged noise symphony is generated real time as people step into the exhibition. The soundscape generated by the interaction is a unique culmination of polyrhythmic marine bioacoustics and human generated noise. A custom made software tracks the audience and recomposes the sound based on their position.

2023Imaginary Terrains Instrument inventors initiative The Hague, Netherlands Imaginary Terrains invites South Asian artists and researchers to collect and compose thoughts and memories of an unclear dissection of the subcontinent: of relics of an erased history, of the pencil that scattered the soil, of the soil that dissolved our grandmothers grave into the river, of the river that cries when the মেছা ভূত (mechhobhoot) arrives, of longing for the whispers that lie in the trunk of the lace-fita hawker. instrumentinventors.org/agenda/%E0%A6%95%E0%A6%BE%E0%A6%B2%E0%A7%8D%E0%A6%AA%E0%A6%A8%E0%A6%BF%E0%A6%95-%E0%A6%B0%E0%A7%87%E0%A6%96%E0%A6%BE-kalponik-rekha-imaginary-terrains/ Group

2022School for MultiSpecies Knowledges Zone2Source Amsterdam, Netherlands The Amstelpark becomes an alternative learning environment in which artists, designers and researchers from various disciplinary and cultural backgrounds come together to search for practices, knowledge and technologies that emerge from post-humanist and post-anthropocentric discourses to rethink the relation we have to our environment. What tactics do we need for – as philosopher of science Isabelle Stengers calls it – an ‘ecology of practices’, in which multi-sensory embodied knowledge and care become part of our relationship to nature again? What do we actually mean by embodied knowledge and multi-species communities—how do you do that, how does that feel, what does it take, and what behaviors and experiences are part of it? We experiment in the park and use rhythm analysis (often applied in urban planning) as an alternative method to tune in to the different rhythms of living organisms. As a previous location for an international horticultural exhibition, the Floriade of 1972, the Amstelpark is the perfect place to learn new stories, experiences and practices for nature-cultures. zone2source.net/en/event/exhibition-programme-school-for-multispecies-knowledges/ Group

2021Ocean Bloom - Tryday V2_Lab for the Unstable Media Rotterdam, Netherlands Making use of 4DSOUND software, the installation explores spatial sound as a medium for accessing hearing underwater. Using sound holograms as dimensional objects in space, the work invites visitors to experience spatial depth and dimensionality in all directions, as in an underwater sonic environment. Together with composer and media artist Sól Ey, Sandipan Nath seeks to address the possibility of uncomfortable sounds and disturbances to overcome the decentralization of human primacy, opening up to nonhuman and material agencies. v2.nl/events/tryday-sandipan-nath-ocean-bloom/?searchterm=ocean%20bloom Solo

Machines for Self Care Sandipan Nath The Hague, Netherlands sandipan.nl/Machines-for-Self-Care-2023 With ‘Machines for self care’, Sandipan develops Samar’s philosophical fieldwork “Listening, with dairy cows” where they learn to harness muted human sensory capacities to access the conversations that cows have amongst themselves and with their environments. Using metaphors, parables and vicarious encounters with the farms’ rhythms, the work involves viewers in forms of expression possible at farms.

With an 8-channel 3D surround sound and full HD projectors, a real-time space mapping is created. The soundscape generated by the interaction is a unique culmination of polyrhythmic marine bioacoustics and human generated noise recorded near the shores of Texel. By intertwining space, sound and image, the installation makes an appeal to create an embodied feeling of the noise pollution marine animals experience everyday.

The work focuses on shipping noise in particular which directly overlaps the frequency band of acoustic communication signals used by many marine animals. The coordinates in the name is the location (Texel, Netherlands) where the noise were recorded over the course of 2 years starting January 2018.

2025Dancing in the Frame Next Nature Museum Eindhoven, Netherlands More and more young people move within the small frame of their phone screen, especially on TikTok. Even while dancing, they unconsciously stay within an imaginary frame to create the perfect video. Dancing in the Frame brings this to life. Step into a life-sized phone and experience the limits of the digital frame yourself. Sensors in the frame detect when you move beyond the edges and trigger a signal. This way, you’ll feel how your freedom is restricted by the screen—even when you think you're moving freely. nextnature.org/nl/museum/digital-wellness-center finished

2022Into Thin Air Stichting Schemerlicht Nijmegen, Netherlands Into Thin Air, a mixed-media sculpture that forms an urban air archive and floating microbial ecosystem. It consists of an impressive curtain of thousands of petri dishes that represent a cross-section of layers of air. Hidden in the layers are dishes with agar that capture invisible particles in the air and thus represent the microbial footprint of the Goffertpark. By making this shared reality visible, visitors become aware of the invisible pet animals that constantly surround us. That sheds new light on the relationship between our bodies and our environment, allowing us to rethink what it means to be human. schemerlichtfestival.nl/ finished
