An emotionally believable story can make us connect with anything. Regardless if a given narrative is true, false or questionable, it’s the story that fundamentally gives anything its value. Dennis The Desklamp is an example of an ordinary functional object, but with a human character that you can develop a relation with. By doing so, I’m providing the start of a connection, of a story, that others may finish.

Through the process of creating and adding meaning intuitively, this project evolved from a blank canvas into this. A mobile instrument that contains 5 instruments which can be played by anybody, intuitively. This public instrument can be played by 5 people simultaneously. Each instrument is individually amplified with a piezoelectric pickup to an external amplifier, to create an atmospheric experience for both the observer and the player.

2020GS Public Provate DDW.nl Eindhoven, Netherlands This year of course, external circumstances have pushed us to adapt beyond the physical graduation show that we had hoped and planned for. Amidst the unpredictability that this year has brought, being able to exchange our thoughts and ideas is still as important as ever. As a result, there are a number of new ways to proudly showcase the work of 184 graduates, who have shown immense adaptability and resilience in creating their projects under these extraordinary circumstances. The BA Public Private department explores the crossover between public and private. On the borders and in the extremes of this field, is where their designers can make the most difference. ddw.nl/en/programme/4637/graduation-show-public-private Group

Dennis The Desklamp Eindhoven, Netherlands basstoker.com/dennis-the-desklamp An emotionally believable story can make us connect with anything. Dennis is a lamp but with human character traits. He is functional, but also sleepy by nature. These two aspects of Dennis tend to collide, resulting in sometimes unwanted, yet understandable situations.

Mingling Lights Eindhoven, Netherlands basstoker.com/mingling-lights Mingling Lights are modular plastic sticks with integrated LEDs and magnets, designed for collective play and unexpected functionality. They can be linked together, or deconstructed again, into any shape and size. Mingling Lights can work on a power bank (with an adapter) and up to 32 units can be attached at once. Conventional lighting often fulfils one function for a particular space. We wanted to explore the potential of a new interaction with light; one that can serve many purposes, and engages people to play and connect. Mingling Lights is a collaboration project between Bastiaan Stoker and Bram de Vos

2020Graduation Catalogue Catalog Design Academy Eindhoven, Oktober 2020 Eindhoven, Netherlands www.ideabooks.nl/9789491400452-project-catalogue-graduation-show-2020-design-academy-eindhoven Published by the Design Academy Eindhoven on the occasion of its 2020 graduation show, this catalogue is an example of what has been referred to as the “extreme present”. At once intimidating and intoxicating, it is built around a reality that is in a state of permanent and accelerated flux. Our relevance is dependent on our ability to uninterruptedly interpret this evolving reality, and it is exhausting. The graduation projects presented here were largely conceived in a past that today seems very distant, one in which things were taken for granted that today, in a world defined by the pandemic, seem unthinkable. However, in many ways this body of work is also anticipatory…
