Bereitschaft Netherlands www.anazibelnik.com/readiness "Bereitschaft serves to illustrate how the pursuit of a fitness ideal can inadvertently perpetuate misogynistic narratives and imagery associated with 'Aryan' ideologies. While much of the presented material may not initially appear to align with far-right ideology, Ganslmeier and Zibelnik adeptly delineate a pattern illustrating how mainstream visual language is co-opted by extremist factions to amplify their influence."

Redpilled Netherlands www.anazibelnik.com/redpilled Redpilled delves into the propagation of alt-right ideology alongside the global surge of memes. Ganslmeier and Zibelnik ingeniously repurpose the ubiquitous meme character Wojak (Polishfor 'soldier') as an avatar, giving voice to the dangerous humour and fascination with violence perpetuated by memes. Initially conceived as a relatable figure ('I know that feel, bro'), Wojak has metamorphosed into various generational archetypes like doomer, zoomer, and boomer. Despite spoofing different age groups, Wojak increasingly embodies the perspective of doomers, individuals who perceive themselves as victims of pressing global issues like climate change and overpopulation. The doomer typically feigns superiority over 'normies' after being ' enlightened' or redpilled. Originally denoting a quest for truth, the term 'redpilled', borrowed from the movie The Matrix (1999), has been co-opted by far-right factions to signal disillusionment with reality, often fostering radical ideologies. The video work is interspersed with cryptic slogans and numerical codes found online by the artist duo, the meanings of which are revealed in the explanatory glossary elsewhere in this exhibition. Redpilled illustrates how seemingly innocuous memes, with mildly racist, misogynistic, and anti-Semitic jokes, can serve as conduits for extremist notions, potentially precipitating real-world violence.

Fault Line Netherlands www.anazibelnik.com/12789487-fault-line Fault Line portrays the impact of the climate crisis in Europe by examining the myriad responses within society. From migration driven by environmental factors, eco-anxiety, and activism on the one hand to the troubling surge of populist rhetoric on the other, it questions how the accelerating rhythm of disasters leads to a deepening of polarization and erodes our collective resilience. Our primary motivation is to present a society-focused visual representation of the climate crisis. Images have an emotional impact and can prompt us to form opinions and take action. Images of environmental devastation, in particular, are often captured from a distance — by drones or are focused on the overall scope of natural and infrastructural damage. What interests us is a closer examination of such situations — how do extreme climate events impact individuals? How does the fear arising from such conditions contribute to the emergence of hateful ideologies?

Immortality is Commonplace /, Netherlands What does it mean to live in the end times? What if we – as human citizens of the planet Earth – are still unable to face the reality that we’re only one among the many species inhabiting the world? What if, ultimately, the world has already ended, yet we’re still unable to grasp it – at least consciously – because of the incommensurable crevice dividing human and planetary time? By initiating the meeting of the natural and the human, Zibelnik refuses to provide any ready-made answers to the ecological dilemma. Instead, she invites the reader to ponder on what makes us human in the face of rapid climate change.

We are the ones turning /, Netherlands www.anazibelnik.com/ Mortals are those who experience death as death. In this sense, human beings are identified by an awareness of the fact that they are running out of time; an awareness which is reinforced and revisited simply by living. We are the ones turning explores how we grapple with the “possibility of impossibility” in everyday life – a topic that extends far beyond the fear of death and can deeply affect our perception of time. Zibelnik combines the prosaic with the uncanny, the sentimental with the insensible, thus contrasting the mechanical flow of time, symbolised by the clock, with our experience of it. The gesture of the turning hands, which sets the rhythm of the series as its Leitmotif, is derived from American Sign Language, where it indicates the notion of death.

2023If a Tree Fell in a Forest Germany A multi screen exhibition installation at the Bergen-Belsen Memorial, produced by Paradox and part of the Creative Europe project Houses of Darkness. If a tree fell in a forest and nobody was around to hear it, did it actually make a sound? Following this philosophical thought experiment, the multi-screen video installation If a Tree Fell in a Forest provokes the question of whether perpetratorship we are not aware of matters. In a time of growing right-wing extremism, A Mirrored Image, Redpilled and 77 Circles deal with ignorance, the accessibility of perpetrator narratives, as well as generational and cultural gaps. ifatreefellinaforest.housesofdarkness.eu/
