"In the paintings of Maarten van Aken, stillness and sultry go together"
Dutch artist Maarten van Aken (1985) is fascinated by the interrelationship between architecture, light and humans. People are rarely seen but their traces can be seen. Seemingly ordinary spaces become interesting in large part of how light defines space and intersections. A window is an intersection, a gateway, like a painting can be. This can also be called a “liminal space”. A liminal space is the place between “what was” and the “next”. A place of transformation, where perception can be played with. Van Aken uses that frame of mind to play with perception using his paintings. The concept of liminality is further explored by using reflections as a way to merge different physical spaces. These newly created spaces are based on reality, but cannot physically exist as a singular space.

2022Homebound Pauluskerk Breukelen Breukelen, Netherlands Homebound refers to the year 2020/2021 in which everyone was homebound due to the lockdown in connection with the measures against the pandemic. A series of works was created as a result of this. Three works from this series are displayed in this exhibition. The starting point for these works are places in and around the artist's apartment. “During the lockdown, I often thought back to a residency I did in Finland in 2016. I was then allowed to work for a month on a small island that was virtually uninhabited. It was in the month of November so it was cold and dark quickly, but the nature was beautiful. I tried to mix that nature and the feeling of freedom with my immediate surroundings within one canvas. In this way new spaces were created. A way to feel mentally free despite the tightness of the lockdown”. Older work also hangs around these works, so that the development of the work can be clearly seen. 2022ÖRES22 Summer Exhibition Örön Residenssikeskus ry Örö, Finland The ÖRES 22 summer exhibition presents selected works from 9 artists who have worked in residence on the Örö island during the past six years. The exhibition presents works inspired by the island and the events faced there, ranging from photography and sculpture to installations and video art. Works are located in uninhabited buildings on the island; an old rowhouse apartment, canteen and an ammunition storage. The locations are marked with signs. ÖRES is an international residency programme for artists and researchers located in Örö, a previously closed military fortress island in the Archipelago National Park, Finland. Group

2022Hotel Finch Supreme Art Rooms Hotel Finch Deventer, Netherlands Boutique hotel Finch in Deventer and gallery Het Bouwhuis have entered into a partnership whereby the Bouwhuis links artists and their work to specific areas within the hotel, including 5 Supreme Art Rooms. These rooms bear the artist's name and allow guests to spend a night (or longer) in a mini-solo exposition. The artworks are of course for sale. Together with the Bouwhuis, the artist is responsible for the new placement of work, so that the room always shows a full exhibition. 2021Rondom Thijs Segers Heartpool Hengelo, Netherlands The Heartpool Foundation annually supports one newly graduated visual artist at the AKI/Artez for a period of one year. With a financial contribution from the heartfund, the visual artist selected by Heartpool will be helped in the first year towards an independent existence as a professional visual artist. Thijs Segers was elected in 2020. Special this time is the participation of the other Hearfund artists with recent work, hence the title 'Around Thijs Segers'. 2020Contemporary art exhibition Ærø Kunsthal Ærøskøbing, Denmark Ærø Kunsthal presents contemporary art exhibitions by Danish and international artists. The Kunsthalle does not have its own art collection, but is a place for vibrant and creative art with changing exhibitions. Ærø Kunsthal is an art hall of international standard and offers exhibitions of high artistic quality, ranging from contemporary art and inspirations to avant-garde artists. The artists are directly related to the exhibitions, so that both the guests and the artists can relate to each other and enter into an artistic dialogue. The renovation of the Ærø Kunsthal from the old merchants house to the art hall creates an artistic dialogue between past and present. The combination of new and old materials and their use play a major role here. Ærø Kunsthal will house all art forms that show that the world has an infinite number of facets: painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, films, photos, mixed media and graphic prints. 2020Above the Sofa Gallery Logman Utrecht, Netherlands In bijna elke huiskamer staat wel een bank en boven elke bank hangt meestal wel iets. We kennen allemaal de gevleugelde uitspraak: “Wat heb jij boven de bank hangen?” Met dat in het achterhoofd hebben samenstellers Lydia van Oosten (kunstadviseur) en Henk Logman (galeriehouder) 50 kunstenaars uitgenodigd om deel te nemen aan deze expositie. In de galerie staan 4 banken; een BR02 van Martin Visser, een Chesterfield en twee speciaal voor deze expositie ontworpen banken (Suzanne Paskamp & Jan Rebergen en Henk Logman). Er zijn schilderijen, tekeningen, foto’s, collages, sculpturen en er is grafiek. Welke bank kies jij en welk kunstwerk zou je er graag boven willen hangen? Hoe zou het zijn als je een andere, wellicht niet voor-de-hand-liggende, maar wel verrassende keuze zou maken? Daarover gaan we in gesprek met de bezoekers. 2019LIGHT Gallery Kiekus Deventer, Netherlands Maarten van Aken is gefascineerd door het spanningsveld tussen architectuur, licht en de mens. De mens is zelden te zien maar zijn sporen zijn wel altijd zichtbaar. Ogenschijnlijk normale plekken worden interessant met name door de manier waarop licht de ruimte en de grensvlakken definieert. Een dergelijk grensvlak wordt ook wel liminal space genoemd. Liminal space is de plek tussen datgene wat was, en datgene wat komt. Het is een plek van transformatie, waar de tijd stil lijkt te staan. Van Aken gebruikt dit denkkader om te spelen met perceptie. Al spelenderwijs wordt het licht en reflecties gebruikt om verschillende fysieke ruimtes samen te voegen. Die in zekere zin echt zijn, maar fysiek niet echt kunnen zijn als één homogene ruimte. De gereflecteerde natuur neemt de verlaten ruimte over. Maurice la Rooy maakt solitaire glassculpturen met een verhaal. Er is geen ‘voor’ en er is geen ‘na’, alleen het kunstwerk dat alles vertelt. Glaskunst, ontstaat in de hitte van een oven, en deze kunstenaar ontvangt de vloeiende massa, versmelt/draait/blaast die tot intrigerende creaties. Hij legt er zijn ziel in, tot na de laatste fase van de afkoeloven. Dan is zijn kunstwerk klaar en moet het zonder hem een verhaal gaan vertellen. www.galeriekiek-kus.nl/ Duo

2019LIBERTÀ Pop-up space Venice Venice, Italy Venice has a bridge called ´Ponte della Libertà´ (Bridge of Liberty) that connects the old Venice on the islands to the new Venice on the mainland. Libertà means freedom. In a city so crowded and expensive, it’s hard to find freedom. But as a community, we can help each other and in that way create it. In a world that has so many rules and restrictions, it’s hard to find freedom. But we can go around bureaucracy and officiality, we can collaborate and in that way create it. In an art environment that leaves hardly any space for experimentation and development, it’s hard to create free work and even harder to show it to others. But if we work together, we can share our ideas, works and thoughts. And more importantly, we can do it, because we can. Because we are already free. And Libertà will be an example of what a community can achieve in freedom. Because: Why not? We are creating an exhibition of contemporary art that touches the subject ´Comune di Venezia´ in some way. The works will be critical, poetic, dramatic and more. People are rarely seen but their traces can be seen. The absence of humans makes the space the subject and as a viewer you can more easily immerse yourself into the space and project your own stories. Seemingly ordinary spaces become interesting in large part of how light defines space and intersections through windows. A window is an intersection, a gateway, like a painting can be. An intersection can also be called a “liminal space”. A liminal space is the place between “what was” and the “next”. It is a place of transition, yet time seems to stand still. Van Aken uses that frame of mind to play with perception. The concept of liminality is further explored by using reflections as a way to merge different physical spaces. Which are in one sense real but cannot physically be real as a singular space. Back to Nature is about the newest series of work that depicts empty store buildings in his hometown. The reflected nature seems to take over the desolate space. 2017Zhongshan Art Museum Dalian, China Maarten van Aken is fascinated by the interrelationship between architecture, light and humans. People are rarely seen but their traces can be seen. Powerful light defines space and intersections. A window is an intersection, a gateway, like a painting can be. Such an intersection can be called a liminal space. A liminal space is the time between ‘what was’ and the ‘next’. It is a place of transition, yet time seems to stand still. In this place we can play with perception. In October 2017 Maarten van Aken was an artist in residence in Dalian(China). The language barrier enforced to be silence, to listen, to observe. This resulted in a mindset of “living in the moment” and the focus shifted towards the light on unconventional combinations in local architecture. The works in this exhibition are an attempt at capturing these moments and to build a bridge between inside and out, China and Netherlands and the physical and imaginary space. 2016Örö Residency Programme, Örö, Finland, artist in residence Örö Residency, Finland Maarten van Aken is a Dutch painter born in Lelystad. He briefly studied Industrial Design before switching to AKI Academy of Fine Arts in Enschede. After graduating in 2012 he won the Buning Brongers prize and the HeArtfund, a one year residency program. In his paintings, stillness, solitude and a tangable tension come together. Light, and the defining effect it has on interior and himself, seem to be an important part of his motive and a link to abstraction. Interiors that are not interiors, empty spaces that are not empty: They dissolve in paint. At Örö he wil shift his focus usually aimed at his own studio to this true solitary space to find out what solitary means for his work. 2012Buning Brongers Price Buning Brongers Prijs Amsterdam, Netherlands De Buning Brongers Prijs is een tweejaarlijkse Nederlandse kunstprijs voor jonge beeldend kunstenaars. De prijzen worden uitgereikt door de Buning Brongers Stichting uit de nalatenschap van Johan Buning, zijn vrouw Titia Brongers en zijn schoonzus Jeanette Brongers. In het najaar van 2020 worden er weer prijzen uitgereikt. De Buning Brongers Prijs is de grootste particuliere kunstprijs van Nederland en is sinds 1966 uitgereikt aan 150 kunstenaars. Aan de prijs is een geldbedrag verbonden van € 4.500. Voor de winnaars wordt bij de prijsuitreiking een tentoonstelling georganiseerd in Arti et Amicitiae en een catalogus uitgegeven. De kandidaten voor de prijs worden door kunstopleidingen voorgedragen.

2012Heartfund Price Heartpool Hengelo, Netherlands HeArtfund: Steun in de rug! Een pas afgestudeerde beeldend kunstenaar verdient een steuntje in de rug. Beginnende beeldende kunstenaars merken het allemaal: het is moeilijk om een zelfstandig bestaan op te bouwen. Wil je als zelfstandig beeldend kunstenaar verder dan wordt meteen én kunstenaarschap én ondernemerschap gevraagd. Het is razend moeilijk om meteen in het eigen onderhoud te kunnen voorzien. HeArtfund wil concrete steun leveren. Daarom heeft de Stichting HeArtpool in 2007 het initiatief genomen om jaarlijks één pas afgestudeerde beeldend kunstenaar aan de AKI/Artez concreet te ondersteunen voor en periode van één jaar. Met een financiële bijdrage uit het Heartfund wordt de door Heartpool geselecteerde beeldend kunstenaar in het eerste jaar op weg geholpen naar hopelijk een zelfstandig bestaan als professioneel beeldend kunstenaar. Werk en professie De ondersteuning uit het HeArtfund kan gebruikt worden voor het ter beschikking stellen van werkruimte inclusief alle kosten voor huur, gas, water en licht, een eenmalige basisvergoeding en een maandelijkse bijdrage in de materiaalkosten voor de kunstenaar. Het kan ook gebruikt worden voor in te roepen hulp, advies of begeleiding bij de start van zijn of haar kunstenaarschap. De ondersteuning vanuit Heartfund gaat ook altijd in samenwerking met Woningcorporatie Welbions en gevestigde kunstenaars. Tentoonstelling en publicatie Het ondersteuningsjaar wordt met inzet vanuit HeArtpool afgesloten met een solotentoonstelling en een publicatie van het gemaakte werk uit die periode. Ook hierdoor wordt de beginnend kunstenaar nog eens goed gepositioneerd voor het professionele vervolg van haar of zijn loopbaan als zelfstandig beeldend kunstenaar. HeArtfund helpt echt!
