Sona Sahakian (1996) is a visual artist based in the Hague, the Netherlands. She graduated from the department Fine Arts at the Royal Academy of the Arts , The Hague. Her works consist of paintings, drawings, collages, photographs , installations and films (video art). In recent years she has participated in various groups exhibitions and projects.
Her works are about the search for an inner experience of time, where memories are made experienceable in the shape of fixation and transformation. She strives for a fusion of past and present , which creates a dynamic and timeless dimension. The transience, the cycle of human existence - life, death and rebirth - plays an important role in this; this transforms our reality and strengthens our human consciousness. In her art she wants to stimulate people's imagination and sensory experiences in which the traces of the past are revived in the present, which remains anchored in her memory and thus enriches her personal history. In this way she wants to inspire people to make an inner journey by really feeling and discovering for themselves what the treasury of their existence is.

2024Ontheemd Haagse Kunstkring Den Haag , Netherlands In a world in turmoil, where humanity and nature are in disarray, many individuals seek stability and security. Due to personal circumstances, natural disasters, or the ravages of war, numerous people are compelled—often abruptly—to abandon everything familiar and comforting, plunging into a completely unknown and frequently inhospitable environment. They become displaced. This theme of losing one’s home, language, recognition, safety, and shelter, as well as the loss of perspective and trust in others, has been the central focus of Suus Zweekhorst's drawings and paintings in recent years. As a curator, she now aims to present this subject alongside other artists in the Albert Vogelzaal of the Haagse Kunstkring. Following a call to the members of the association, she invited eight visual artists and various poets, theater makers, actors, and musicians to share their experiences and perspectives on the theme. 2021Exhibition '' The Roaring Twenties'' at Pulchri Studio Pulchri Studio The Hague , Netherlands The Roaring Twenties The 1920s were a period of major changes in many areas. In the period between the two world wars, crises were accompanied by reconstruction and increasing (urban) prosperity. The roaring (or flashy) twenties were characterized by lightning-fast developments in material, political and moral areas; the rise of mass culture, consumerism, jazz music and the glitz and glamor of Hollywood. Or what about the emancipation of women and art movements such as Dada, Surrealism, Expressionism and Art Deco. Or races and record attempts such as Charles Lindbergh's first solo flight across the Atlantic in 1927. The roaring twenties have also been described as a period of freedom and the beginning of the 'modern age'. Now, mid-2021, the end of the corona time is in sight. People have been limited in their activities for a year and a half and have saved tens of billions extra. When restrictions are lifted, there may be another period of bubbling like 100 years ago. We want to enjoy again, especially now that we know what it's like to be in a lockdown. The money will start rolling again. Hopefully there will be years of economic growth again, but more controlled than before the corona crisis. Life will be different in the coming years. A different governance style, greater emphasis on the environment and sustainability, greater understanding of inclusiveness, equality and mutual responsibility. And who knows, maybe we'll get a modern-day Charles Lindbergh going to Mars, for example. In any case, let's hope that art and culture will finally get the support and attention they deserve again. For this exhibition, the walls of the Mesdagzaal are imaginary divided into panels of 1 ½ meters wide and the floors in sections of 1 ½ by 1 ½. 2021International Print Mail Art ‘’See things in perspective’’ Stichting Grafein Amsterdam After a year of inactivity because of the pandemic, the Grafein Foundation invited printmakers from all over the world to participate in its International Print Mail Art Project 2021 with the theme: See Things in Perspective. We have asked participants to send in postcards (10×15 cm or 15×10 cm) created with a printmaking technique. We have received 286 cards per post from over 30 countries. With this exhibition Grafein also links up with the Fête de l’estampe, which has been organised by Manifestampe in France for many years. 2021My inner journey Loft Land of Free Thought The Hague , Netherlands Since last month there is a new exhibition in our church, namely the work of Sona Sahakian! Sona is mainly inspired by nature and the spiritual world. The work on display here shows Sona's emotional and spiritual experiences of her walks through the Armenian mountains. The soft colors and natural elements invite the viewer to a moment of rest, reflection and meditation. The film reels show images from the film Sona made for her graduation and tell a story about life, death and rebirth. The long reels of film hanging on our high wall show Sona's interpretation of the experience of time, transformation and the meeting of the past and present. It started with the incredible story of Sona's great-grandfather: After World War II, he was pronounced dead and flown back in a coffin to his family in Armenia. The family wanted to make sure it was him, so the coffin was opened before burial. While saying goodbye, they noticed that he was still warm to the touch: he was immediately taken to the hospital, where he was extensively examined. After a month in a coma, the doctors were convinced that he would never wake up again, but Sona's great-grandmother was not satisfied with that. She took him home and took care of him for 7 years, until - against all odds - he awoke from his coma. In the end he lived an active life and lived to be 86 years old. Group

2021ALL INN Het HEM Zaandam, Netherlands Nine art academies, a hundred and seventy-five young artists, one exhibition. For the first time in history, recently graduated art academy students from all fine arts bachelor’s programmes in the Netherlands are presenting their work together. ALL INN chooses collaboration over competition and collectivity over individualism. The initiative anticipates the uncertainty of an artistic career by offering young artists a broad introduction to the art world. This, on one hand, translates into a carefully constructed exhibition that highlights the dialogue between various works and current tendencies in the arts, and on the other hand, into an extensive public program curated by the young makers themselves. ALL INN was initiated by nine Dutch bachelor’s degree programmes in fine arts, in collaboration with curator Rieke Vos. 2020Corona Collection The Hague The Historical Museum of The Hague The Hague, Netherlands When the coronavirus strikes the Netherlands in March of 2020, The Hague changes: supermarket shelves and streets are empty, museums, theatres, gyms and restaurants close their doors. Public life comes to a halt; The Hague is in lockdown. To record this exceptional experience and its impact on the city for future generations, The Historical Museum of The Hague started the Corona Collection (page is in Dutch). With assistance from hundreds of city residents, volunteers and photographers, a large number of objects, diaries and photos were collected. In this presentation, you will see the consequences of the first lockdown and the impact of this time on the city and its residents. The objects, photos, videos and diaries show the uncertainty, fear and sadness, but also the togetherness, creativity and (at times dark) humour that accompanied this experience. In addition to the personal submissions and diaries of city residents, a selection of photos taken by documentary photographer Sandra Uittenbogaart are also exhibited. This series of photos is the result of a collaboration between The Hague Municipal Archives and The Historical Museum of The Hague. The complete series is also be viewed via the digital data base of The Hague Municipal Archives. A special feature is the ‘In times of corona’ photo project by Johan Nieuwenhuize, which links photos by the artist with other recent corona-related photos. 2019Note to Self Billytown The Hague, Netherlands Cognitive dissonance is a state of mental discomfort when a person holds two or more contradicting beliefs, and it’s felt especially when new evidence clashes with already-held values. We think that in today’s world cognitive dissonance is more present than ever before, and therefore very relevant. Connectivity and access to more information have not lead to widespread truth, but rather to confusion and uncertainty. Instead of our views becoming more open to different ways of thinking, they have become more radical and polarised. A dichotomous way of thinking isn’t representative of reality, yet we see just that becoming more prevalent all over the world. Our pre-exam show will aim to instigate this concept in exhibition format. It will showcase contradicting sides forced to occupy a shared space, along with the ensuing consequences. We want to expose people to varying, contrasting and juxtaposing artworks and activities. From silent workshops to loud game shows, to yoga exercises, to debates and cooking, we want to subject our audience to different wavelengths, to different points which don’t necessarily add up to a neat conclusion. 2021Publication in ALL INN catalogue Catalog Zaandam, Netherlands Nine art academies, a hundred and seventy-five young artists, one exhibition. For the first time in history, recently graduated art academy students from all fine arts bachelor’s programmes in the Netherlands are presenting their work together. ALL INN chooses collaboration over competition and collectivity over individualism. The initiative anticipates the uncertainty of an artistic career by offering young artists a broad introduction to the art world. This, on one hand, translates into a carefully constructed exhibition that highlights the dialogue between various works and current tendencies in the arts, and on the other hand, into an extensive public program curated by the young makers themselves. ALL INN was initiated by nine Dutch bachelor’s degree programmes in fine arts, in collaboration with curator Rieke Vos. Het HEM is the generous innkeeper that welcomes ALL INN and its visitors and embraces them with warmth and care. The project has been made possible with the support of Mondriaan Fonds, Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, NN Group and Stichting Stokroos.

2021Publication of my work '' Let's go '' in Online Catalogue International Print Mail Art Project Catalog Amsterdam, Netherlands issuu.com/grafein/docs/online_catalogus_ipmap2021_versie_2022-11_ After a year of inactivity because of the pandemic, the Grafein Foundation invited printmakers from all over the world to participate in its International Print Mail Art Project 2021 with the theme: See Things in Perspective. We have asked participants to send in postcards (10×15 cm or 15×10 cm) created with a printmaking technique. We have received 286 cards per post from over 30 countries. With this exhibition Grafein also links up with the Fête de l’estampe, which has been organised by Manifestampe in France for many years. Some other countries outside of France also participate in this event.

A social, identical, and cultural marker, the veil is neither limited to its history nor to its pragmatic or symbolic use. It is not necessarily physical but could be represented non-materialistically as well. The etymology of Veil is "to cover, conceal, mask, disguise (something immaterial)". There are many iterations of veils in society and cultures, in nature such as a fog or mist, and veils between worlds or realms of consciousness. A social, an identity, a cultural marker, a veil is neither limited to its history nor to its pragmatic or symbolic use.

This visual compelling work explores time, life and cycles of change in a stunning way. Based on the moving story of Sahakian’s great-grandfather and the environments of Armenia, Oblivion gives us questions and answers about time, place and it’s deeper connections. 2021My film '' Everything comes and goes is the winner of the MENA Film Festival The Hague The Hague, Netherlands Jury report Sona Sahakian was able to make a connection between herself and the elements of the surrounding nature. When human relationships deteriorate during the corona and are limited by the requirements of the corona pandemic, the creator has nothing but to reattach to living things living with us on this planet. It is a victory of life and movement and a rethink of the rose that grows spontaneously in the middle of the road. Story of the film Sona: "The film "Everything comes and goes" is about the transience and the cycle of human existence. I experience the corona time as an event where everything comes and goes. Life is endless and infinite, and birth and death are only transitions. Change always takes place and destruction, destruction and decay leading to a new existence. So I want to show that you need to appreciate, enjoy and have a positive outlook on all the little things in your life, no matter how difficult the situation is."
