"News From Home - Kaohsiung" is a project and exhibition by Anne Fehres and Luke Conroy and was completed and on show in April 2024 at the Pier-2 Art Center in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. This project was undertaken during the three-month Pier-2 Artist in Residence program and is supported by Stroom Den Haag and the Pier-2 Art Center. "News From Home - Kaohsiung" by Anne Fehres and Luke Conroy is a layered exploration of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. This multimedia exhibition delves into the everyday life of the City, weaving documentary realism with playful surrealism. In the works presented, Kaohsiung’s past reaches through to the present, everyday life is celebrated and future dreams emerge. In early-2024 the artist duo immersed themselves in Kaohsiung, covering over 300 kilometres by foot as they connected with the local community. During this exploratory process they captured over 9000 photographs, alongside hours of audio-visual material. This fieldwork served as the foundation for a series of large-scale photomontage installations and accompanying audio-visual works. Each installation combines hundreds of digitally composed photographs of daily life in Kaohsiung to create a series of interconnected narratives. These works utilise a colour palette inspired by the vivid temples and the neon glow of street signs. Alongside this, the exhibition’s audio-visual works present an endless stream of ephemeral moments captured in Kaohsiung. These moments are interwoven with the spoken stories of students from Kaohsiung Municipal Jhongsiao Elementary School. Ultimately, 'News From Home - Kaohsiung' presents a collective vision of the City, highlighting the significance of everyday moments in shaping its distinct identity. The exhibition offers a rich, layered portrayal of Kaohsiung, intertwining the personal insights of the artists with the potential for diverse audience perspectives.

The year is 2070 and you are about to be catapulted into an absurd, yet eerily plausible yoga session. Through an odyssey that transcends the bounds of conventional cinema, a captivating experiment unfolds, one that plunges its participants into profound contemplations on the interplay between humanity, nature and the wellness industry. At the heart of this journey, is a gilded figure who gracefully undertakes a series of poses under the guidance of an off-screen narrator. Through celestial cues, serenity takes a surreal turn, evolving into a paradoxical and ultimately rather uncomfortable experience. Unfolding disrupts the instructor's role as a spiritual guide, illuminating the delicate dance between humanity and the environment. Anne Fehres and Luke Conroy weave a narrative that challenges preconceived notions about our relationship to the natural world. By doing so, they invite viewers to reimagine their surroundings and actively respond to the climate crisis, through a distinctive, emotional approach that fosters empathy for both the human and the non-human in our existence. Their methodology combines visual stimulation, profound content and a dash of humour, providing a unique lens through which to explore the urgent issue of our time. – Vanja Kaludjercic Presented in collaboration with Art Rotterdam

Titled "La Festa dei Nojesi," (The Feast of The ‘Nojesi ‘– the local people) this project is a monumental photomontage installation that delves into the multi-layered cultural fabric of Noepoli, Italy. Commissioned by Artepollino—an association established in 2008 to foster the cultural growth of this rural area, collaborating with artists including Anish Kapoor, Carsten Höller, and Giuseppe Penone—this work is the outcome of an immersive one-month residency, during which we engaged deeply with the locale’s rich history, gastronomy, and community rituals. Our practice thrives on community-based, co-creation methodologies, making Noepoli not just the subject but also the collaborator in the creative process. We anchored our approach in participant observation and intimate dialogues with the local populace—from winemakers to oregano farmers, from homemakers to artisans. Complementing our social exploration were visits to museums and historical sites, specifically capturing artifacts and visual memories from the Enotri civilization. This research culminated in a six-by-three-meter photomontage, a vivid layering of over 900 images—reminiscent of Enotri burial sites where items from pottery to food were layered as vignettes of life. The thematic veins of our work extend from antiquity to contemporary culture. Grapes scattered throughout the montage symbolize the ancient Enotri vineyards, while images of the Madonna di Costantinopoli procession stand as metaphors for ongoing community rituals. Importantly, the work avoids a prescriptive narrative, inviting viewers to find their own meaning within the tableau. It serves as an open-ended archive that engages the audience in a constant dialogue between the past, present, and the evolving future. “La Festa dei Nojesi” is, at its core, a celebration of Noepoli's diversity, its history, and its present. Just as Noepoli rests on a mountain amid clouds, each fragment of our montage emerges like a narrative layer from the nebulous memory of the community. It is a tribute to the soul of Noepoli, an homage to its people’s pride in their rich heritage, and a testament to the universal human yearning for connection to place and community.

News From Home is an ongoing project by the artist duo Anne Fehres and Luke Conroy, capturing overlooked stories from communities. The 10th edition of this project took place during a 4 week artist-residency in Mondovì, Italy, as part of the broader European project Dialog City. In News From Home, the artists were interested in exploring both the objective and subjective stories of the community and its members, relating to both a global and local perspective. To achieve this, during the residency the artists conducted field research in Mondovì - making observations, meeting the community and capturing photographs. Alongside this, the artists engaged with the community through various forms of physical and digital co-creation, inviting them to contribute their ideas and images related to considering Mondovì in the past, present and future. The outcome of this research and image collection was the creation of a large-scale 6x2 metre photographic composition. This work was presented on a wall in public space during the Hybrid Festival in Mondovì from July 20 — July 22. The final composition consists of almost one thousand individual elements, inspired by the multi-layered identity of Mondovì. These layers present a diversity of perspectives on Mondovì and include such elements as children’s drawings, historical images, photography of daily life submitted by the community, graffiti scratched into walls around the city and spontaneous staged portraits in the streets. Through this collision of diverse layers, the work celebrates Mondovì as a place where elements of the past, modern reality and future dreams constantly overlap, inviting the audience to consider diverse narratives from both a local and global perspective. Partners: Co-Funded by the European Union

As the common saying goes, “seeing is believing”. It seems this applies as much to physical experiences as it does to virtual ones. Whether visiting Linz in person or online, it is frequently visual perception that takes priority and informs one’s sense of place. What new realities might emerge, then, if the virtual and physical spaces of Linz are instead experienced via sound? In Virtual Listening the audience is invited to explore this question through a site specific, participatory sonic experience. In this 10-minute experience, the audience is blindfolded and transported by the artists through the FMR 23 festival site on a specially created vehicle. During this journey the audience encounters their surroundings via a geolocated narration and soundscape, generated from AI and artist’s encounters with Linz in both physical and virtual space. A key part of these sound layers was a spoken narration. The focus of this narration was to both guide the user through the festival site, while offering various fragments discussing how digitisation and virtual worlds shape and are shaped by society. Within this work, the audience also hears additional soundscapes crafted by Jim Zweerts, a Netherlands-based sound artist and electronic music producer. The journey ends with the audience member being safely returned to their original starting location and their blindfold removed. How has this experience changed their perception of Linz? How can they share these new auditory memories with others? With their vision now returned, can they piece together the path they traveled? Did they even travel anywhere at all? Is it that “hearing is believing”? The project was exhibited in the FMR23 – Biennial, a festival for art in digital contexts and public spaces that took place in Linz, Austria, from June 6 to 11, 2023. The audio used in the work can be found in the below video. Alongside this audio is a animated 3D scan of the festival site where the work was exhibited. This imagery was collected by the artists during their research and production residency in Linz during March 2023.

News From Home is an ongoing project by the artist duo Anne Fehres and Luke Conroy, capturing overlooked stories from communities. The ninth edition of this project took place in Plovdiv (Bulgaria) as part of Context AiR. The basis for News From Home - Plovdiv was a 6 week artist-residency in Summer 2022. During the residency the artists conducted field research within this community - making observations, meeting the community and capturing photographs. The outcome of this research and visual imagery was the creation of a large-scale photographic composition, presented in public space. The aim of this work is to explore the subtle yet meaningful stories of Plovdiv from the past, present and imagined future, drawing inspiration from both the community and the artists’ own interpretations. The final composition consists of hundreds of individual elements, inspired by the multi-layered identity of Plovdiv. Through this collision of diverse layers, the work celebrates the unique urban identity of Plovdiv as a place of ancient history, socialist heritage, modern reality and future dreams. The final piece was printed out and pasted up to cover a 5x4 metre wall in the centre of Plovdiv. Here, we hope a broad audience can view and enjoy the work, reflecting on the city as a resident or someone passing by.

In this work an audience is led through a series of ‘yoga-esque’ movements by an ‘other-than-human’ narrator – a tree. The work is exhibited via a video projection at a large scale, alongside a simultaneous live performance by the artists who demonstrate the movements instructed in the video. This project was commissioned in the context of ‘Purpose Reporting’, an experimental project in which artists give new interpretations to the quantitative impact data of various organization. In this project we were tasked with interpreting the impact data of Fun Forest – a social organisation in The Netherlands who offer active and confidence building experiences in nature. Reading through the ‘impact data’ of the Fun Forest, there was various statistics and written accounts aiming to capture the organisation’s core values. While all the information in the report was valuable, the fact that it was delivered through solitary reading, sitting safely at a desk and likely indoors meant that these values were not activated. Our motivation for this activity, therefore, was to create an audience experience where these core values could not only be stated but felt in a multisensory way. In this work, the audience (from the organisations taking part in the program) were encouraged to participate in five different movements, each inspired by the organisation’s key values. Through a direct, playful and humourous experience of these values, this work successfully interpreted the organisation’s social impact in innovative and surprising ways.

Talk To Me - De Heygraeff Audiotour is a public art installation that takes the audience into the world of four ‘other-than-human’ residents at De Heygraeff in The Netherlands. In this audio tour you can listen to fictional conversations with Marko the Douglas fir, Leela the mole, Janneke the boom barrier and Martijn the street light. This project was created as part of the 3-month artist residency ‘Re-creatie Reinarde’. During this residency, myself and collaborator Anne Fehres, lived and worked in the unique context of a care facility for adults with severe disabilities. The ultimate aim of this project is to provide a greater connection between the ‘inner’ environment of this care facility and the ‘outer’ recreation area just outside the facility fence. Although close in proximity, these two worlds traditionally have little crossover. We have structured this audio tour to encourage not just a physical movement of people between these inner and outer spaces, but also an intellectual movement. Through the various absurdist, fictional dialogues in the audio tour, there was an aim to blend humour, philosophy and insight into the disability context. Indirectly, each of the conversations touches upon themes and ideas which are sensitive to the diverse perspectives on disability. Responding to our research, observations and discussions during the residency period, each conversation has been inspired by insights through thinking about disability from the standpoint of the 'outsider', the care-worker, the family member, the care organisation and the disabled. All the tracks for the audio tour are recorded in Dutch and were designed to be listened to on location, through scanning a QR Code which takes you to the project website. The audio works are also viewable as video works with English subtitles, filmed on location.

Naked Windows is an immersive, 360-degree video, a meta-work exploring and imagining the possible realities outside of the rectangular boxes presented in virtual meetings. In the video the audience occupies the role of a voyeur, invited by the artists to peer ‘backstage’ into their personal interior spaces while they engage in a virtual presentation. In this role, the audience must negotiate their own curiosity and voyeurism while exploring the boundaries between public and private, truth and fiction.

Each day many people pass along De Heygraeff by car, wheelchair, bike, horse or walking. For most of these people however, they have never met Leela, who lives happily alone and out of sight underground. In this conversation Leela takes the listener on a house tour, discusses magic and debunks some rumours about moles. During a residency at Artist Residencies Enschede (ARE) the duo of Luke Conroy (Australia) and Anne Fehres (The Netherlands) created a project around the explorer Abel Tasman. This figure is historically and culturally linked to each artist’s country of origin, a result of the 1642 voyage where Tasman accidentally 'discovered' the island now called Tasmania, the place where one half of the artist duo grew up. In their research, the image of Tasman that grew was one of a heroic seafarer from a small village. Upon leaving on his expedition to explore the unknown southern lands, the instruction of Tasman was that "all continents and islands, which you shall discover, touch at, and set foot on, you will take possession of…”. Tasman’s voyage was captured in great detail in his journal and through this the artists have been able to build an image of Tasman’s brief stop in Tasmania, where he planted a Dutch flag and proclaimed ownership. While Tasman’s methodical and businesslike journals provide an important record of white European’s first contact with this island, the artists were instead inspired by what such accounts leave out. Not only do these journals lack a record of any emotion of Tasman and his crew but, more importantly, they are entirely from the perspective of the outsider looking in. In their exhibition therefore, the artists aim to expand the imagination around the journey of Abel Tasman. In doing so, the artists were inspired by the culture of the internet and 'fake news', where disinformation and fluidity around truth and authenticity has become the status quo. In a time where the truth has multiple perspectives, the artists want to give this mass of conflicting information a physical form. The works produced during the residency are regarded by the artists as 'mind maps' of contemporary existence that visualize the enormous flow of information and ideas. In their works, the transient and fragmentary elements of the digital world are given a space to be considered in a new way. The works are created out of a variety of eclectic resources from 90s pop culture, internet iconography, stock photography, historical archives and personal images. Each piece in the exhibition consists of hundreds of individual images that have been digitally brought together and later added to with a variety of manual techniques. What emerges from this approach, is a mythology that is full of contradictions and new interpretations, where Abel Tasman remains

Phantasm is a video art project presenting various surreal scenes that explore the notions of ‘nature’ and ‘the natural’. The project involves various video projections in the main exhibition space of Hošek Contemporary, an old cargo boat floating on the River Spree. In Phantasm the audience is invited to consider the complex relationships that we as humans have with the concept of ‘nature’. It is a relationship where often nature is perceived as wild and unpredictable, something to escape from and have mastery over. At the same time however, it is also framed as an idyllic and nourishing place that we need to ‘get back in touch with’. Further complexity around the idea of ‘nature’ is then added once labels such as ‘natural’ or ‘unnatural’ are applied to people, ideas, actions and inventions. What is left is a concept of ‘nature’ that is full of contradiction and confusion, where the lines between what is considered ‘natural’ and ‘unnatural’, the human world and the natural world are constantly blurred. This confused state acts as the starting point for the artists in Phantasm. In this project the artists have brought together original footage sourced from Europe, Asia and Australia, alongside found footage and 3D objects. Each of these elements come together to form an abstract narrative spanning science, technology and culture. This narrative has been constructed through research into the curious ways that humans interact with and consider nature. Some of the ideas presented are the recent developments in human cloning, the ’cloud seeding’ technology that allows artificial influence the weather, the health and beauty industry’s pressure to look and eat ‘natural’ as well as our manipulation of animals to act as food, friends, religious icons, entertainment and space explorers. When each of these layers, alongside various others, are considered alongside one another it highlights the confusion, complexity and contradiction at the heart of ‘nature’.

This video explores the role of the family portrait. The fundamental claim of the family portrait is that it holds proof of the happiness, intimacy and enduring relationships that only family can offer. Behind the smiles however, these portraits also offer clues into these relationships and the role of each individual within the family. Moving back in with my parents recently, as an adult, I noticed my childhood family portraits hanging throughout the house. Each one was a clear reminder of my positioning as the child and them as the parent. A constant almost subliminal prompt, it became easy to again define my current self by that child I saw all around me. This video positions myself within a photo of my parents, captured when I was a child. While their positions remain happily static, my role has now changed. I occupy the unfamiliar role of the animated, contemplative and unguarded sitter. As the images on the walls around me change, I break down the constraints of the traditional portrait. I reside in the moments before and after the static smile of a family photo. It is here that I am considering exactly who I was previously and what I want to be now.

2024News From Home – Kaohsiung Pier-2 Art Center Kaohsiung, Taiwan News From Home - Kaohsiung 來自家鄉的新聞-高雄 by Anne Fehres and Luke Conroy is a layered exploration of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. These moments are interwoven with the spoken stories of students from a local elementary school. 2024International Film Festival Rotterdam in collaboration with Art Rotterdam Public Space Rotterdam, Netherlands The year is 2070 and you are about to be catapulted into an absurd, yet eerily plausible yoga session. Their methodology combines visual stimulation, profound content and a dash of humour, providing a unique lens through which to explore the urgent issue of our time. iffr.com/en/iffr/2024/films/unfolding Group

2023News From Home - Mondovì Public Space Mondovì, Italy News From Home is an ongoing project by the artist duo Anne Fehres and Luke Conroy, capturing overlooked stories from communities (see previous editions of the project here). 2023La Festa dei Nojesi Public Space Noepoli, Italy Titled "La Festa dei Nojesi," (The Feast of The ‘Nojesi ‘– the local people) this project is a monumental photomontage installation that delves into the multi-layered cultural fabric of Noepoli, Italy. It is a tribute to the soul of Noepoli, an homage to its people’s pride in their rich heritage, and a testament to the universal human yearning for connection to place and community. www.luke-conroy.com/noepoli Duo

2023Linz FMR23 Public Space - Linz Linz, Austria LINZ FMR is a biennial festival and format for artistic processes and positions, that reflects the ephemeral nature of our digital and connected present. The ever-advancing digitalization of everyday life implies an intense overlapping and layering of familiar physical, but also finely interwoven digital spaces. LINZ FMR focuses on the shifts, distortions and rifts that arise in this process and presents current artistic positions in this context. The festival, whose title alludes to ephemerality and short-livedness, presents works whose initial ideas can be found in virtual and/or digital space or have a strong reference to it, but are shown (sometimes in a transformed way) in the physical surroundings of the city of Linz. The focus is primarily on the interstices that arise during these transformations into public space – outside of museums, galleries or art spaces. www.linzfmr.at/event/virtual-listening Group

2023Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition Hong-Gah Museum Taipei, Taiwan Since its inception in 2008, Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition (TIVA) has been committed to exploring the versatility of video art in conjunction with various mediums. This endeavor not only reflects the overall climate in society but also addresses pressing issues and trends that shape our path towards the future. For this edition, TIVA has invited independent curator HSU Shih-Yu and Director of Hong-Gah Museum Zoe Chia-Jung YEH to curate the exhibition. Under the theme "Living Togetherness," the artworks featured in the exhibition center around the concept of "care" as they engage in a profound dialogue about how humans and non-humans take care of each other in varied circumstances and settings—here and now. Through an inquiry into cultural and ecological legacies from a non-anthropocentric standpoint, the audience is prompted to reexamine the significance of “togetherness.” As with previous TIVAs, the team invites artists to produce commissioned works; concurrently, the open call received an overwhelming response, with nearly 500 submissions from 55 different countries. The artworks of the finalists which hail from diverse cultural backgrounds confront various circumstances of life and materials, making the fluidity and continuation of images a medium of care. The judging panel for the final selection of the 2023 TIVA Exhibition includes Ruby I-Hsuan HSIEH, film critic, and Women Make Waves International Film Festival programmer; Wan-Yin CHEN, playwright, and contemporary art researcher; Oyindamola Fakeye, Artistic Director of the Centre for Contemporary Art, Lagos, Nigeria, and founder of the Video Art Network Lagos; and Camila Marambio, scholar and curator who curated the Chilean pavilion at the 59th Venice Art Biennale. Their individual contributions enrich this thought-provoking discussion as they offer their insights on the quality of video art works, their relevance to the theme, and how artists infuse their cultural backgrounds into their artistic expressions. www.twvideoart.org/tiva_23/en/living-togetherness/ Group

The work consists of hundreds of images of the sky, submitted to the project by people in over 80 different countries in the two years prior to the exhibition. Solidarity Sky initially began in 2020 as a virtual community driven artwork with the aim of bringing people together during the various COVID-19 lockdowns through sharing personal images of the sky. People of all ages were invited to become the artists in this project, contributing their own ‘piece of sky’ that joined a larger ‘virtual sky’ made up of hundreds of photographs from across the world. During the project, over 1200 individual photographs from 80 different countries around the world were submitted. 2022We Are Here Public Space Stigliano, Italy 'We Are Here' is a project by the artist duo Anne Fehres and Luke Conroy which celebrates community and cultural heritage through food, sharing and art. For three weeks the artists lived and worked in the rural Southern Italian town of Stigliano. During this period they invited the community to share their personal recipes and the stories associated with them. These various recipes and stories were captured and are now presented as public artworks around Stigliano. Each of the artworks has been inspired by a documentary process whereby the local community talked about their personal recipes during the process of creating them. During this process, the artists captured photographs of the creator, the creation process, the food elements and surrounding objects. Later the artists digitally combined the multiple photographs associated with each recipe into a single photomontage composition, bringing together the diverse elements in a surreal and playful way. Each composition has been digitally printed and is presented in the public space of Stigliano at a ‘larger-than-life’ scale. Each of the installed artworks is celebratory, bringing the recipe and creator from the private space of the home to the public space of the streets. Through this presentation, the local community and a broader audience is encouraged to reflect upon the recipes that hold important cultural value in this place, to find pride in local heritage and connect with each other in new ways. www.luke-conroy.com/we-are-here Duo

2021Talk To Me Public Installation De Heygraeff, Netherlands Talk To Me - De Heygraeff Audiotour is a public art installation that takes the audience into the world of four ‘other-than-human’ residents at De Heygraeff in The Netherlands. The audio works are also viewable as video works with English subtitles, filmed on location. www.re-creatie-reinaerde.nl/activiteiten/audiotour Duo

2021The City Pushkinskaya-10 St. Petersburg, Russian Federation This show is the result of a joint virtual residency that twelve artists and art collectives based in Europe and Russia had undertaken in May-June 2021. For six weeks, they moved into their online studios at the #VirtualSPAR platform to explore the relationship between the modern city and all that is inside, outside, and beyond its urban space. Together, they reflected on the place and role of art in a modern city and on its potential to change how we experience different environments, engage in social practices, and become agents of change ourselves. For this exhibition I produced a work titled 'Naked Windows'. This is an immersive, 360-degree video, a meta-work exploring and imagining the possible realities outside of the rectangular boxes presented in virtual meetings. 2020Tasman Concordia Enschede, Netherlands During a residency at Artist Residencies Enschede (ARE) the duo of Luke Conroy (Australia) and Anne Fehres (The Netherlands) created a project around the explorer Abel Tasman. This figure is historically and culturally linked to each artist’s country of origin, a result of the 1642 voyage where Tasman accidentally 'discovered' the island now called Tasmania, the place where one half of the artist duo grew up. In their exhibition the artists aim to expand the imagination around the journey of Abel Tasman. What emerges from this approach, is a mythology that is full of contradictions and new interpretations, where Abel Tasman remains just as unknowable as ever. www.luke-conroy.com/tasman Duo

Tree No. 140, Purpose Reporting, Thrive Institute Amsterdam www.vimeo.com/754600360 In this work an audience is led through a series of ‘yoga-esque’ movements by an ‘other-than-human’ narrator – a tree.

The project is based on the creation of various 2D art objects which are closely aligned with the ‘postcard’ form. The aim of these objects is that they provide an opportunity for the artists and the greater community to gain a multilayered insight into a place, its social life and diverse identity. The cultural history of the postcard means that whatever is placed on its front is given a symbolic pedestal. This is a space usually reserved for the iconic. These icons are people and places which the 'tourist gaze' prefers. News from Home changes this narrative of the postcard, instead favouring the local, hidden but equally significant stories and people that make up a place.

Phantasm Hošek Contemporary Berlin, Germany www.luke-conroy.com/phantasm Phantasm presents a series of three surreal scenes that combine moving and still imagery. Each of these scenes juxtaposes the urban against the natural, where the boundaries between each are blurred. Captured between Tasmania, Japan, Croatia, Nepal and Java, each scene presents a mixing of tones and textures where water laps around chlorophyll greens and concrete greys. The life of this project began through experiences in the natural world, but was only realised when this experience was considered against the urban environment. In the city, one is witness to the incessant and unpredictable push and pull of those around them. Whether it is the people or the built environment itself, it is a place of constant flux, far removed from the majority of human existence before this point in time. This seems to stand in opposition to romantic notions of nature as peaceful, idyllic and relaxing. In the city, nature becomes a place imagined as meditative, secluded and simple.

On the basis of deepening the development of local arts and cultural activities, PAIR also actively expands international links through exchanging programs. With artist-in-residence program and art educational activities, PAIR aims at enhancing connections between Kaohsiung and international art communities. To encourage more international trans-disciplinary collaborations, to provide Taiwan artists more international opportunities, and to create more possibilities into art center; PAIR continuously works on establishing our art networks supporting diversity of arts both locally and internationally. en.pier2.org/artist/

2023ArtePollino Noepoli, Italy During August 2023 I undertook a month-long residency in Noepoli, Italy, alongside my long-term collaborator Anne Fehres (Stroom Artist). This residency was commissioned by Artepollino—an association established in 2008 to foster the cultural growth of this rural area, collaborating with artists including Anish Kapoor, Carsten Höller, and Giuseppe Penone. The result of this residency was the creation of a public artwork titled "La Festa dei Nojesi," (The Feast of The ‘Nojesi ‘– the local people) this project is a monumental photomontage installation that delves into the multi-layered cultural fabric of Noepoli, Italy. During the residency our focus was on community-based, co-creation methodologies, making Noepoli not just the subject but also the collaborator in the creative process. We anchored our approach in participant observation and intimate dialogues with the local populace—from winemakers to oregano farmers, from homemakers to artisans. Complementing our social exploration were visits to museums and historical sites, specifically capturing artifacts and visual memories from the Enotri civilization. This research culminated in a six-by-three-meter photomontage, a vivid layering of over 900 images—reminiscent of Enotri burial sites where items from pottery to food were layered as vignettes of life. www.artepollino.it/

2023Dialog City Mondovi, Italy I was selected for the DIALOG CITY ART FOR PUBLIC RESIDENCY in Turin and Mondovì, held from June 20 to July 24, 2023, alongside my collaborator Anne Fehres. Our project aimed to deeply explore the stories of Mondovì's community, blending both local and global perspectives. Throughout the four-week residency, we engaged in in-depth research, community collaboration, and observation, seeking to capture the objective and subjective narratives of the community. Our work was characterized by strong participation, involving the community in our artistic process. The culmination of our residency was a large-scale photographic composition exhibited during the DIALOG CITY HYBRID FESTIVAL from July 20 to 22, 2023. dialogcity.eu/project/art-for-public-residency/

2023Peira Space Bremen, Germany In February 2023, I participated in the online Glocal Class for Digital Performance of Tender Absence, a network for glocal performance art in digital spaces. I participated alongside my collaborator Anne Fehres, alongside ten other global artists. This exchange program of workshops, talks, and work sessions took place during the week of 20-24 February 2023. The intensive week focused on the question of how artists could work together in a locally situated and globally networked way. The digital artistic form was also the focus of the discussion: How could we produce beyond streams and zoom meetings? Who did we address on the Internet? How could we convey our local realities globally without exoticizing them? ta.peira.space/

2023CYENS Centre of Excellence Nicosia, Cyprus During my residency at the CYENS Centre of Excellence in Cyprus, which spanned November and December of 2023, I had the honor of being one of only seven artists chosen from a competitive field of over 150 international applications. This period was marked by a deep engagement with cutting-edge Artificial Intelligence technologies, developed in collaboration with the Learning Agents and Robots (LEAR) team. The core project of my residency was the development of a 15-minute Virtual Reality (VR) experience. This immersive and surreal creation invited audiences to interact with and contribute to a non-linear narrative. By integrating multiple narrative paths, the work deliberately transcended conventional historical interpretations, allowing the audience to experience a fluid navigation between diverse 'truths.' This approach in storytelling not only redefined audience engagement but also challenged the traditional boundaries of historical narrative in the contemporary art scene. The residency was curated by Dr. Ellada Evangelou and coordinated by Dr. Theopisti Stylianou-Lambert and Kleanthis Neocleous, in a collaborative effort with CYENS Thinker Maker Space. This unique opportunity represented a significant intersection of artistic creativity and technological innovation, setting a new benchmark in the integration of art and technology in my practice. www.instagram.com/cyensboundarycrosser/

2022Municipality of Plovdiv Plovdiv, Bulgaria News From Home is an ongoing project by the artist duo Anne Fehres and Luke Conroy, capturing overlooked stories from communities. Here, we hope a broad audience can view and enjoy the work, reflecting on the city as a resident or someone passing by. www.luke-conroy.com/news-from-home-plovdiv

2022Matera 2019 Stigliano, Italy 'We Are Here' is a project by the artist duo Anne Fehres and Luke Conroy which celebrates community and cultural heritage through food, sharing and art. Through this presentation, the local community and a broader audience is encouraged to reflect upon the recipes that hold important cultural value in this place, to find pride in local heritage and connect with each other in new ways. www.matera-basilicata2019.it/en/progetti/creative-communities/2889-we-are-here.html

2021Re-creatie Reinarde De Heygraeff, Netherlands Talk To Me - De Heygraeff Audiotour is a public art installation that takes the audience into the world of four ‘other-than-human’ residents at De Heygraeff in The Netherlands. Responding to our research, observations and discussions during the residency period, each conversation has been inspired by insights through thinking about disability from the standpoint of the 'outsider', the care-worker, the family member, the care organisation and the disabled. www.re-creatie-reinaerde.nl/activiteiten/audiotour/

2020Offcity Pardubice, Czech Republic The seventh location for 'News From Home' is in Pardubice, Czech Republic, where we will explore the meaningful yet often overlooked and omitted stories of the community. In our previous editions of this project, these stories have been explored ‘in-person’ in a particular city. In the current climate of "switched off cities" however, in the Pardubice edition of News From Home we will complete this project in ‘virtual space’. The conceptual basis of 'News From Home' is a consideration of a simple object - the postcard. We are interested in how the postcard, through its glossy, saturated images offer a window to a place that is not altogether truthful - it is a constructed reality. The aim of our project therefore, is to explore the idea of this ‘constructed reality’ further, to create a series of postcards for the city of Pardubice, without ever actually visiting this area. In order to undertake this project, we will explore the city of Pardubice from afar, through the virtual space of the internet. In this exploration we will collect a vast amount of images/ideas – from locations such as blogs, social media users from Pardubice and Google Earth – and use these as the basis for our art works. The outcome will be a series of 4 postcards from the city, presented online. These postcards will be digital collage pieces, made of up of potentially hundreds of resources sourced online. A testament to a place we have only experienced from afar. www.luke-conroy.com/news-from-home-pardubice

2019Institut für Alles Mögliche Berlin, Germany During this residency I began the ongoing project 'News From Home' with my coolaborator Anne Fehres. The first iteration of this project took place in the Berlin neighbourhood of Wedding during a residency in January and February 2019. During this time we were based at the Institut für Alles Mögliche. Six pieces from this residency were presented at the exhibition space ‘Vitrine Blanche’ in Berlin during March 2019. Each piece in this exhibition combined over 50 individual photographs captured throughout the residency period. These images were digitally recomposed to create scenes that illustrates the people, stories and places that we found intriguing during our time in Wedding. An additional aspect of this project is a series of eight smaller designs presented as postcards. Our choice for the postcard form is important for this project, it helps our intention of favouring what is outside the tourist gaze. The cultural history of the postcard means that whatever is placed on its front is given a symbolic pedestal. This is a space usually reserved for the iconic. We hope that these new postcard forms change the narrative of the postcard, to offer insight into underrepresented but important people, stories and places. We hope these postcards can find their way elsewhere to help share an alternative view of Wedding and Berlin. www.i-a-m.tk/

2019Riddergrade, Viborg Kunsthal Viborg, Denmark This residency was the fifth location for the ongoing collaborative project 'News From Home' Here we were part of the residency program at Viborg Kunsthal, working for 6 weeks during August and September 2019. In this project we are exploring the area of Viborg- it’s places, people and their stories. The ultimate aim of this project is to complete various postcards and larger prints which focus on the anti-iconic. Rather than the well-known or stereotypical images of this community that the outside world or tourist is familiar with, we aimed to create works based around people, stories and objects that are usually hidden. viborgkunsthal.viborg.dk/

2019Frosterus, Kattilakoski Culture Cooperative Kärsämäki, Finland The third location for the ongoing project 'News From Home' was Kärsämäki in Finland. Each piece combines over 70 individual photographs captured throughout the residency period. These images were digitally recomposed to create scenes that illustrates the people, stories and places that we found intriguing during our stay in Kärsämäki. airfrosterus.org/

2019Hošek Contemporary Berlin, Germany During my time at Hošek Contemporary, I, alongside my collaborator Anne Fehres, worked on and presented an exhibition titled ‘Phantasm’. This work presented a series of surreal scenes that combined moving and still imagery. Each of these scenes juxtaposes the urban against the natural world, where the boundaries between each are blurred. The aim of these scenes is to highlight our complex relationship with the natural world. The urban spaces of humans are often presented as positive places of modernised comfort, culture and opportunities. This contrasts a wild, unpredictable and frightening ‘nature’. In contrast, urban spaces can at the same time also be framed as a place of pollution, loneliness and control. Here, the natural world is longed for as an idyllic, beautiful and nourishing alternative. Phantasm seeks to raise the question: ‘is our removal from nature a triumph or a tragedy?’ The project however, does not provide a guidebook for how to navigate this complex question, preferring the audience consider this issue themselves. www.hosekcontemporary.com/

Here, myself and collaborator Anne Fehres, were part of the SIM residency program for 5 weeks during November 2019. In this project we are exploring the area of Reykjavik and beyond - it’s places, people and their stories. The ultimate aim of this project is to complete various postcards and larger prints which focus on the anti-iconic. Rather than the well-known or stereotypical images of this community that the outside world or tourist is familiar with, we aimed to create works based around people, stories and objects that are usually hidden. www.sim.is/

2023Better Images of AI AIxDesign Amsterdam, Netherlands This project, a collaboration with AI4Media, Better Images of AI, and AIxDesign, challenges traditional representations of artificial intelligence (AI) through a series of four digital collage artworks. As one of three artist teams selection for this commission, myself and colaborator Anne Fehres created four pieces that delve into AI’s complex interactions with human life. The artworks – “Hidden Labour of Internet Browsing,” revealing the unseen human input in digital tasks; “Humans Do The Heavy Data Lifting,” spotlighting the overlooked human labor in content moderation; “Models Built From Fossils,” metaphorically representing AI data biases; and “Data is a Mirror of Us,” reflecting AI’s societal role – are designed to initiate deeper conversations about AI. These works, displayed here, are part of a broader effort to foster a nuanced understanding of AI’s evolving role in society across various media platforms. These images are part of the Better Images of AI stock library, for royalty free use in digital and print media. https://betterimagesofai.org/images aixdesign.co/ finished

2022Virtual Reality Experience of Cheese Tasting Centre National Interprofessionnel de l'Economie Laitière New York, United States CNIEL commissioned 5 artists to organize a permanent exhibition in its space in New-York, the French Cheese Board. The space is currently being renovated and is scheduled to reopen in mid-June 2022. CNIEL is very interested in digital art and have always wanted to be a forerunner on new subjects, and love the experiential side of digital art. The brief from CNIEL was to create a work which reflected upon the 'cheese tasting experience' – to ask: What senses are involved? What is the neurological image of a cheese tasting? What is the gustatory representation of cheese? What area of the brain is activated? For this commission I have produced a 360-degree VR experience. This work embraces surrealism, kitsch aesthetics, colour, the senses and movement. This virtual and imaginative world aimed to capture the cheese tasting experience - where there is so much variety, artistry, history and pleasure involved. www.frenchcheeseboard.com/ finished

2024Living Togetherness Catalog Hong-gah Museum Taipei, Taiwan www.twvideoart.org/tiva_23/en/living-togetherness/ Luke Conroy is featured in the exhibition catalogue of the Taiwan Video Art Exhibition. Since its inception in 2008, Taiwan International Video Art Exhibition (TIVA) has been committed to exploring the versatility of video art in conjunction with various mediums. Under the theme “Living Togetherness,” the artworks featured in the exhibition center around the concept of “care” as they engage in a profound dialogue about how humans and non-humans take care of each other in varied circumstances and settings—here and now. Through an inquiry into cultural and ecological legacies from a non-anthropocentric standpoint, the audience is prompted to reexamine the significance of “togetherness.”

2020News From Home - The Newspaper Book independent The Hague, Netherlands www.luke-conroy.com/newspaper This is the first presentation of the ongoing documentary project 'News from Home'. The paper presents 52 stories and accompanying art works from this project, sourced from the six countries in which it has been undertaken. In this publication you can explore the many meaningful yet often overlooked or omitted stories of these communities. These stories range from the universal to the particular, the beautiful to the bizarre. The aim of this publication is to provide a platform for greater recognition of these largely untold community stories. Through sharing, we hope they gain a wider audience, who can appreciate the lives of those elsewhere, while also allowing it to inspire a reflection of one's own community. The reason for printing as a newspapers, is a deliberate ‘nod’ to the project’s focus on the community. Rather than presenting a delicate, hard-cover 'art book', we believe the newspaper is a more familiar and accessible way to access local stories. As such, it is our aim to present community stories and contemporary art in the newspaper form, where it can be read, appreciated and perhaps even used to start a fire later in it's life. Details: • Edition: 100 Copies • Pages: 16 • Language: English • Material: 55gsm paper, digital colour print • Publisher: newspaperclub.com • Weight: 50g
