IIn 2015, Tarek, a man in his 30s, arrived in Austria after fleeing Syria with his family. To be completely frank, Tarek had never heard about the Krampuslauf, the Maibaum, the Fasnacht, the Bergfeuer, the Almabtrieb, the Neujahrskonzert, the Fronleichnamsumzüge, Klimt, the Allerheligen, the Gauder Fest, the Jodeln, Freud, the Stille Nacht , the Schuachplattln, Mozart, Princess Sissi, the Wiener Walzer, the Kaiserschmarren, Hermann Maier, the Sacher tort, Falco, the Osterratschen, the Philippinacht, or the Brautstehlen. The only Austrian thing Tarek had ever heard of before his arrival, was Arnold Schwarzenegger. In 2015 the intensity of refugee movements caused a massive crisis of the European border regime. Most refugees fleeing Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria took a long and extenuating march to find refuge in the wealthy countries of the European Union. For a big part of them integration has not been easy (and still isn’t) having had almost no common trait with their new Alpine homeland. One tradition however, ties this small landlocked country in the Alps, to a far way middle-eastern area: bodybuilding. This sport, considered as the national sport in both Afghanistan and Iraq (and widely popular in Syria), led hundreds of its escaping citizens, to be inspired by its most famous athlete, at the same time one of the most successful examples of self-made-man. From a small village to Governor of California, from 0s to heroes, from rags to riches. This is the story of a self-centered sport, accidentally becoming the possible tool of integration for those pursuing a path to success in a foreign land.

Video made in collaboration with Graphic Designer Maarten Meijl. This video was presented together with a photographic installation inside the bunker. The two mediums worked by echoing each other, as they carried the same message: the vertical war which took place in the North East of Italy from 1915 to 1918 can be understood by the simple subversion of top and bottom, high and low, the highest peak of a mountain and the deepest sea bottom.

2018Vista Fronte Mare ("Front Sea View") Rifugio Anti-aereo, Piazza Primo Maggio Udine, Italy “This is a project that reflects on the destiny of two neighboring provinces. During the first World War, in the height of the Italian Alps, the men of Friuli lost their ground to the Austrian Army, while down below in the Austrian Sea, the men of Trieste lost their territory to the Italian Navy. Their stories are mirrored in opposite altitudes. Vista Fronte Mare compares the two sides of defeat, by taking advantage of our general conception of High and Low and flip it upside down.” In the spring of 2018 in occasion of the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1, I decided to create a multimedia work to reflect on the “vertical war” that occurred in my region, between the Austrians and the Italians. The project made use of both archival material and an animated video and was hosted in the humidity of a bunker in the center of Udine, one of the two cities heavily affected during the conflict. The video, made together with Maarten Meij, focuses on the territorial dichotomy of the highest and lowest points in the region where the First World War was fought (=the highest mountain and the deepest sea bottom), locations which for the most are inaccessible. The data information of the exact zones, in the form of 3d mappings was received on request from geologists of the area and then re-converted so to create an animation lasting 4.5 minutes. The exhibition lasted one week and was commisioned by the Comune di Udine town hall, and by the cultural association OnArt, based in Udine. messaggeroveneto.gelocal.it/tempo-libero/2018/04/23/news/in-castello-1.16748394 Solo

2016Stray Dogs Walk the Red Carpet ALU Sarajevo Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina During the field trip organized by the photography department of the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague, 10 photographers out of the 34 visiting the city, were chosen to show their view on the city of Sarajevo, after a one week permanence in Sarajevo. My photo series dealt with the documentation of the biggest media center in the country: "The BHRT media center was built in 1984 in occasion of the Olympic games, back when a good economy could guarantee vast working enviroments. These standards were the consequence of political choices which then ended up influencing relations between camera operators, anchormen, men and women. Since then the building remained untouched, but it still seems to influence the life of the employees. Can comunication between people be affected by old instruments and out of date surroundings? I decided to follow those who make the news of this century but still work in the past one". www.sarajevotimes.com/exhibition-stray-dogs-walking-the-red-carpet-in-sarajevo/ Group

--Borgo di Villafredda I was asked to invite two different artists able to talk and respond to the thematics of the event Festa di Villafredda, now at its 10th edition, taking place in Tarcento, Italy. Zurich-based photographer Joel Hunn and The Hague interior-designer Jesse Greulisch both exhibited their works for three days. Within this picturesque frame the two works (one, a presentaion of 7 images, and the other a mobile wood installation), created a dialogue with the pre-existing set up of the event. Along with the curation of this small part of the event, I took care of the image and coordinated the creation of the event's website. borgovillafredda.com/
