A book is a stack of paper with at least some glue, possibly some yarn. If you open it, you can accidentally end up in the middle of a story. The ink brings the representation of the written to life. There is a boundary between the book as a material interface and the imaginary representation of a material reality outlined in the book. Writer and artist Chloë van Diepen is standing in the middle of that border and focuses on this duality. It brings together an immaterial and material world. Reader and user coincide.
In the design of the booklet, the frayed edges make the boundary between book and the hand into a twilight zone. The layout is not a frame but a space of reciprocity between book, content and reader; worked out by the author i.s.m. graphic designer Dayna Casey. The booklet is, as a zine, a torn-out part from a larger book which contains identical parts. The zine is not sold but flows from hand to hand, from place to place, giving it a roaming existence in our midst through its many small gestures.
Texts about the project by Corinne Heyrman and Freek Lomme.
