During last summer solstice 21th June I hosted a ritual to celebrate the sun. Together with sun-loving friends we started at 5:32 to change the curtains in the auditorium @janvaneyckacademie . This gesture reveals the imprint of 7 years of sunlight and is now giving the auditorium a more soft and subtle look.

One centimeter of marl is — on an average — a compression of 1000 year material and time. This project investigates the notion of scale and time in the formation of the Earth. A tapestry is developed that addresses the industrial mining of the ENCI open-pit-quarry in Maastricht, The Netherlands. The ENCI excavated in 100 year time a sedimentation process of ±70 million year that formed a combination of marl (limestone) and flintstone

Textile register of rain fall at a specific location. With the prevalent rains in the Netherlands and its history of struggling with the elements, rain is deeply rooted in Dutch culture. I questioned what it would be like to capture the experience of rain fall on textile, so it becomes possible to ‘wear the weather’. For this I developed my own technique ‘pluviagraphy’; photographic recordings of rain precipitation on textiles with a film coating that is sensitive to water.

2024The Soils Project Van Abbe Museum Eindhoven The soil is the basis of our lives. It is where our ancestors once lived and where future generations will build a life. It is the link between the past, present and future. The source that feeds us. But the relationship between humans and the earth is often tense. From soil depletion and overproduction to land theft and (labour) exploitation. How can we re-ground ourselves in our environment? And how does that help us reconnect with each other? The group exhibition Soils addresses these questions. International artists, designers, farmers and activists work on more empathy for our soils. vanabbemuseum.nl/nl/tentoonstellingen/soils-in-bewerking Group
