Viktor Hachmang

Viktor Hachmang is a Dutch illustrator, who primarily works in comics and the graphic arts field. His illustrations have been published by The New York Times, Die Zeit, MIT Technology Review and Wired and he has collaborated with major international clients such as Hermès, Kenzo, Lacoste, Herman Miller and Diesel. Aside from these commissioned works he focuses on experimental comics with a heavy emphasis on innovative print techniques and an unusual use of colour. Hachmang attempts to elevate the status of the comic book, traditionally associated with pulp and low culture, by crossing over into high art and the artist book. He has made his comics debut in 2016 with his short story Book of Void, published by the British publisher Landfill Editions – the first in a string of experimental short story collections. In early 2018 his graphic novel Blokken was published by Nijgh & Van Ditmar, based on the dystopian science fiction novel of the same name from 1931 by the acclaimed Dutch writer Ferdinand Bordewijk. In 2025, Franco-Belgian publishing house Casterman released Hachmang's first French language graphic novel, titled L'Arpenteur ("The Surveyor") – a contemplative work of post-apocalyptic science-fiction with wild genre-bending mood swings. Hachmang’s graphic output, often bordering on sci-fi and allegory, seems to take place in a highly personal liminal zone where the everyday haphazardly intermingles with flights of dream and fantasy. His works are exhibited regularly, both nationally and internationally, and can be found in the permanent collections of the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam) and the V&A (London).
