infoThe Great Moon Hoax is based on the somewhat forgotten scientist John Herschel (1792-1871). We are interested in him because he was not only an important mathematician and astronomer, but also did a lot for photography (e.g. he invented the process used to fix silver-containing photographs (with thiosulfate), the cyanotype process is his and he coined the word photography). Although he is not so well known anymore, he was one of the most famous scientists of his time. That is why he was also used for a famous hoax from 1835, The Great Moon Hoax. This was a series of articles in the New York newspaper the Sun about life on the moon that could be studied in detail with Herschel’s telescope. We have used a shortened version of this text in its original font and have entered descriptions from this text into the program DALL.E, a program that converts text into images. So a kind of hoax of images on the hoax from 1835.
