Teratology is the scientific study of abnormalities. In this exhibition, artists Anne Geene (NL, 1983) and Lana Mesić (Yugoslavia, 1987) come together around their shared interest in things that are irregular, overlooked, or don’t quite fit in.

Bestiaries are ancient manuscripts that weave together tales of every kind of creature—real or imagined—alongside stories of stones and trees. Rather than striving for naturalistic description, these texts cast the world as a mirror of divine truth. Offering moral lessons through the lives and the natures of beings great and small, all bestiaries trace their lineage to a Greek work known as Physiologus. Written sometime between the second and fourth centuries AD by an unknown author, it grew into one of the most cherished and widely read books of the Middle Ages. In this work, Geene and De Nooy create a contemporary photographic bestiary inspired by that ancient source. Drawing on quotations from a recent translation and blending found images with their own, they breathe new life into this mystical text. Though their approach is neither Christian nor didactic, the behaviours revealed by the creatures in Bestiary still offer stories from which moral insights may quietly emerge.

This monography offers an introduction to the life, work and opinions of the universal photographer U. (1955 – 2016), a man who produced more pictures of more different subjects in more different styles than any other photographer to date. In U., numerous features of other photographers, philosophers, scientists and collectors can be recognized, but closest to his character may well be the protagonists of Flaubert’s novel Bouvard and Pécuchet. Like them, U. had a tendency to copy, collect, combine and study, and, like them, he lacked common sense. This resulted in remarkable methods, peculiar preferences and naïve solutions to self-made problems. Besides being a monograph of U., The Universal Photographer reflects Geene & De Nooy’s view on the art of photography, characterised by relativism and even absurdism, but most of all it is a celebration of photography. Its primary quality – to copy – is taken to extremes through U.’s straightforward approach. Reading the history of photography as photos of photos of photos, U.’s work may well be an invitation for even more photos. In the words of Bouvard and Pécuchet: “No reflexion! Let’s copy!”

Ornithology refers to the scientific study of birds, including their physiology, classification, ecology and behaviour. Due to their visibility and colourful appearance, birds are a popular subject of both the sciences and the visual arts – photography in particular. With their pseudo-scientific approach hunter-collectors Geene & De Nooy defy the borders between these disciplines. Their classification of bird pictures exhibits the humorous outcome of creative and associative thinking, with every section of Ornithology opening new perspectives on birds. Geene & De Nooy manifest themselves as rare birds in the world of bird photography, dominated as it is by people with the ‘classic’ aesthetic view. Many of the birds they shot are dead, others are representations and sometimes only their building material or excrement appears. Ornithology may be seen both as a photographer’s study of birds and as an ornithologist’s excursion into photography. The book is highly recommended by Charles Darwin, Harper Lee, Humphrey Bogart, Charlie Parker and Woody Woodpecker, amongst many others.

2026Ellas Ilustran Botánica CDAN (Centro de Arte y Naturaleza) Huesca, Spain The exhibition Ellas Ilustran Botánica (“Women Illustrate Botany”) in Spain explores the overlooked role of women in the history of botanical illustration. Developed by researchers from the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, the project highlights how women contributed to scientific culture despite long-standing restrictions on female participation in academia. First launched in 2020, the exhibition evolved into a large cultural archive featuring hundreds of women artists and more than 300 works, including illustrations, books, photographs, sculptures and audiovisual pieces. It shows how botanical illustration became an important way for women to engage with science across five centuries. The exhibition traces this history from seventeenth-century artists such as Giovanna Garzoni and Alida Withoos to pioneers like Maria Sibylla Merian in the eighteenth century, and nineteenth-century figures including Mary Delany and Elizabeth Twining. Alongside these historical works, contemporary artists such as Anne Geene, Claudia Fährenkemper and Katie Scott demonstrate how botanical imagery continues to connect science, publishing and contemporary art through photography, digital techniques and experimental visual practices. www.cdan.es/exposiciones/ Group

2021Accumulation of Things Museum Kröller-Müller Otterlo, Netherlands For Vestibulum 4, Geene takes an envious look at the collection method of Helene Kröller-Müller, the museum’s founder. Helene considered her collection closed, the collection had to remain a self-contained whole. But can ‘a carefully selected succession of works of art’ ever be complete? In Vestibulum 4, the central theme is the human urge to collect and Geene examines concepts such as possession, completeness, selection and desire. krollermuller.nl/anne-geene-accumulation-of-things Solo

2019The Universal Photographer Art Museum The Hague The Hague, Netherlands Anne Geene & Arjan de Nooy have loosely based The Universal Photographer on Gustave Flaubert’s unfinished 1881 novel Bouvard et Péchuchet, in which two men in their fifties survey the state of affairs in a wide range of fields, from chemistry and psychology to religion and farming. Like these protagonists, U. had a tendency to copy, collect, combine and study – and just like them he lacked common sense. This resulted in unconventional methods, peculiar preferences and naïve solutions to self-made problems. Anne Geene & Arjan de Nooy’s method of systematic documentation is reminiscent of the work of Christian Boltanski, as in his Archives du Cœur, a constantly growing archive of the heartbeats of people all over the world. Like Mariken Wessels, who had a solo exhibition at The Hague Museum of Photography last year, Geene & De Nooy create a fictional account based on photographs they have found and taken. Comparison with Hans Eijkelboom also seems unavoidable, in the sense of photography used as a conceptual medium and, not least, because of the healthy measure of dry humour. Solo

2018Begin at the beginning, and go on till you come to the end: then stop. CentroCentro Madrid, Spain Drawing from a phrase in Alice in Wonderland, this exhibition explores players and playfulness in contemporary photography. The curator Hester Keijser has chosen twelve artists because of the elaborated playfulness in their work or their willingness to accept challenges that expand their creative capacity. Two teams (one Swiss and the other Dutch) have been formed with six players on each. The exhibition features a selection of videos by Roman Signer that mark the midpoint of the playing field. The visitors will be able to place an un-vote for the un-winning team, but without knowing for which team they are casting their un-vote. The exhibition will present a selection of videos, installation works, a conceptual piece, a site-specific assemblage, a spoken word performance, stop-motion videos, anamorphic prints and photo-based embroideries, as well as experimental Polaroid prints based children´s colouring tools. Thank you! You’ve reached the end. Now stop.

The Great Moon Hoax Blind Finch Books The Hague, Netherlands www.blindfinchbooks.com/ Although the English polymath John Herschel (1792–1871) is now largely forgotten, he was the best-known scientist of his day. Due to this stature, he appeared unknowingly in a now famous hoax regarding the discovery of life on the moon. These ‘lunar observations’ were published in 1835 in the newspaper The New York Sun. In order to give credibility to the fabrication, they were falsely (but humoristically) attributed to Herschel. The story describing life on the moon introduces all kinds of non-existing animals, including human-like beings, exotic plants, unlikely buildings and vast lunar landscapes. Herein we reproduce excerpts from the original 1835 text. Using DALL.E, a text-to-image model that can be instructed to produce ‘photographs’ from selected sentences, we added fictitious images to the hoax.
