2020Dragon of the White De Ketelfactory Schiedam, Netherlands This photo project aims to visualize, summarize and lift the memory of two centuries of unique cooperation in the field of trade and knowledge with Japan through Deshima (Nagasaki). It consists of three disparate series, which passionately complement each other. Present is tied to past, fact to fiction. Solo

Europe's Betrothal Spain www.grrr-editions.com In 1996 I travel along the border between Portugal and Spain, exemplary model for lifting borders. In 2018 I follow this route once more. To test the waters. What is the state of the European contact? Has the alliance, the betrothal between the partners led to a hellish marriage, or a heavenly one? Are we headed for an ugly divorce or will we be proudly celebrating our silver wedding? This project is an explorartion of change and movement. Along the length of the border, across the width of the route and through the depth of time: over two decades. Portraits (name, profession, date of birth) alternate with situations and events, infernal and still. This publication wants to gauge the unease and share what is left of the optimism. http://www.guusrijven.com/archive/eng/projects/theborder/index.html

Uitgelaten Stad (Elated City) Netherlands www.guusrijven.com/work/sidewalk-empire-i---spectator-photos/2/ The street the theater, the court city the stage. The publication is a model for new urban living in general, with the court city (the Hague) as a living room in particular. Freely accessible events, sporting and cultural festivities and street parties are the guiding principles, the experience of the modern urbanite the starting point for this photographic essay. There are two main characters in this piece: the participant and the spectator. The first interprets his character close to the skin of the event: the camera zooms in, casually though driven into the frame. The spectator, on the other hand, is standing in public space and has to stand up to it: the camera zooms out, balanced in its environment, which is almost as important.

The Ease of Animals Geen www.guusrijven.com/work/the-ease-of-animals/ How animals are in the front row. Animals are patient. They're good listeners, can sometimes even retrieve, others cloak themselves in mystery. In such cases birds set the tone. They sing the silence from the leaves. Posing prettily is something else. As long as they follow their nature they are outside time. So resolute are animals.

Gold Rush Canada www.guusrijven.com/work/gold-rush/ Yukon River Revisited (1972-2011). In 1972 I travel through Canada, hear about the Yukon River in the far north, rent a canoe and descend the river with two friends to Dawson, 750 km downstream. Forty years later, I fly with my son and two other fathers and their fifteen-year-old sons to Whitehorse, the capital of Yukon Territory. I descend the river once again, in three canoes all together. Initiation for the child while I, the father, paddle through my own history. Goldrush is a quest from the surface to the bottom of the Lake of Memory. Personal and general, experience and history in one.
