Abu Ahmad, moved to the Idlib countryside, after which he eventually became one of Aleppo’s first White Helmets volunteers in 2013. “I saw the bombing and people needing help, so I thought this is the least I can do,” he says. He moved back to the outskirts of Idlib after Aleppo was taken by the regime and lived in exile until December 2024, just after the opposition took control of the city. Aleppo, Syria.

Graduation Work / "Intervals of warm absence: the daily life experience of those left behind in Romania" focuses on the daily life of Larisa, 18, a high school student living in Vătava, Romania, whose parents worked in Spain for 5 years. Through the project I visualise the absence of the parents by observing the interactions with her sister, boyfriend, and grandmother, but also the mental and emotional hardships of a forced maturity. How does the absence of migrant family members affect the daily lives of those left behind? According to the Global Migration Report 2022, Romania is the 17th largest country of origin for migrants in the world, and according to Save the Children 2023, almost a quarter of children have a parent who has worked abroad. There is a lot of focus on those who leave and not those who stay, without asking what it feels like to be left behind by your family, especially at the beginning of your life. I want to challenge the perception that migration only affects those who leave, by highlighting the impact on children and asking how this will affect the future with a generation of children who have a fragmented presence of their parents.

The yard of Susana and Victor's house. They keep a few chickens for meat and dogs and a dog to protect the house from thieves. The house does not have running water and the toilet is located in their garden. During the winter, they use a stove with wood to heat the room they are living in, which is used for cooking food too.

Susana is burning waste and preparing the yard for her husband’s burial. Victor died on the 8th of October 2019 suffering from liver cirrhosis caused by nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, three months after Susana’s sexual assault. In Romania, the dead family member is kept in the guest room of the house for three days, but Susana wanted to bury Victor on the sixth day after his death because Wednesdays and Fridays are fasting days in the orthodox religion and she wanted to serve food with meat for the guests.
