The short film, “When fox and rabbit say goodnight.”
Presenting clearly artificial depictions of humans as closely to their real counterparts.
Finn Stevenhagen is a filmmaker and installation artist who uses computer animation, scenography and animatronics to explore the limitations of human expression through fictional narratives. The quality and presentation of the narratives are dictated by their themes as the mediums shift with the characters.
In 2022, Finn Stevenhagen was given an honorary award in the Computer Animation category of Prix Ars Electronica for the short film ‘When fox and rabbit say goodnight.’ and it has since been screened in the Netherlands, Latvia, Romania, Turkey, Hong Kong and the USA. In 2023, he became an artist member of Pulchri Studio, The Hague, NL.

In My Tender Care Den Haag, Netherlands finnstevenhagenfilm.weebly.com/in-my-tender-care.html “In My Tender Care” is an expanded cinema installation chronicling the estrangement between Charlie and his mother. Originating from a screenplay, the installation seeks to give agency back to the audience by removing the chronology of a film’s timeline. Consisting of animatronic talking mouths in a set, a floor to ceiling projection of computer generated animations, and two additional video works presented on CRT TV screens, “In my tender care” presents turning points and whole acts simultaneously, locked in scenes that are scattered across the room. Exploring each scene will expose more of the story and they can be viewed in any order. Characters, who take on the forms of disembodied floating mouths and digital humans, inherit empathy through the fidelity of their animator. As artificial forms, these characters are pushed to encounter the limits of what emotions their bodies can perform. By juxtaposing a characters’ limited ability of expression with their desire to do just that, one presents clearly artificial depictions of humans as closely to their real counterparts.

When fox and rabbit say goodnight. Den Haag, Netherlands finnstevenhagenfilm.weebly.com/when-fox-and-rabbit-say-goodnight.html “When fox and rabbit say goodnight." is a short film following a boy on his search for love and constancy. The film appropriates the hollow animation aesthetic of early 2000s' video games to explore the themes of neglect and grief through the limited dialogue, body language, and the depiction of characters. Negligence during the modeling, texturing, and animation stages has become the basis of the unspoken narrative and reinforces the themes.

2022What does that have to do with me? Parallel World Labs, Canada Mannheim, Germany "What does that have to do with me?", is a permanent multimedia exhibition at the Marchivum in Mannheim, Germany. A collaboration between Parallel World Labs, the Marchivum, and Tatwerk/finke media, this poignant exhibition takes a deep dive into Mannheim's Nazi era and asks the following key questions: What changes when a democracy is destroyed by a dictatorship? And how does democracy succeed again afterwards? This highly interactive digital exhibition tells the history of Mannheim during the Nazi dictatorship. I created the animations of its water installation. www.pwlabs.com/our-work/was-hat-das-mit-mir-zu-tun-what-does-that-have-to-do-with-me
