Walking Seminar/Water in the Cityinfo
Walk-driven research project into the future of water in the city, digitalisation and biosphere boundaries. As part of Chrisian Ernsten and, Dirk-Jan VIsser’s Walking Seminars project () commissioned by Stroom, we took Making the source of the Haagse Beek visible (1992) by Krijn Giezen as the starting point for a walk-driven research project into the future of water in the city. Following in Giezen’s footsteps, in this chapter we will take a walk along the Haagse Beek. With radio maker Marten Minkema

Presented were the Algae Lab, a film and results of workshops under artistic direction of Henriette Waal/Atelier Luma in Arles, Caïro, Istanbul and Italy that explored algae practises and ecosystems. Endangered algae species were regenerated, algae were used to 3D-print prototypes of domestic items as well as to color wool. Drawing on particular cultural archives from each location, a hybrid traditional-contemporary craft-digital aesthetic emerges, provoking us to unlearn the limiting preconceptions with which we value materials and production techniques. Supported by Luma Arles.

Rice is the most important foodstuff for much of the world’s population. The rice agricultural waste however represents a major environmental challenge. Leftover rice straw is often burned which causes serious air pollution. For the May Your Rice Never Burn project by Atelier Luma and Estelle Julian, Maria Vidagañ, Silvia Caballero, with Henriette Waal as artistic leader, sought a way to use this leftover matter as a raw material for something new: a construction material for reinforcing dunes and coastal areas in Camargue, a wetland in the south of France where lots of rice is grown.

With the Buitenbrouwerij, her mobile beer brewery, Henriette Waal has since 2010 been developing beers with nature and stories from the Wadden, an area off the north coast of the Netherlands with wetlands and tidal flats. Together with a local home brewer, she developed Zeebier on Terschelling Island. The Eilander and Parelduiker beers with mineral-rich dune water and oysters from Vlieland Island were brewed for Into the Great Wide Open festival. To commemorate the forgotten war disaster off the coast of Vlieland in 1666, the Outside Brewery launched in 2016 ‘Rampzalig’ (a combination of the Dutch words for ‘disaster’ and ‘delicious’) a layered amber beer with smoked malt and seaweed. Brewing with the landscape on Vlieland Island has been embraced and made sustainable in collaboration with two inspired entrepreneurs. Fortuna Vlieland brewery opened at the end of 2019. The brewery has its own source of dune water, harvests the sun on its roof, and is likely to be the most beautifully located brewery in the Netherlands. Fortuna Vlieland makes sparkling water and beer using plants from the dunes and mudflats. The brewery not only adds a locally made product and remarkable attraction to the island but also offers a unique way of engaging with the landscape.

In the wake of a rising global interest for resilient cities and water management issues related to human habitat, Atelier Luma (Henriette Waal & Elisabeth Guyon) investigated this global concern on a superlocal level. In March 2018, Henriette Waal initiated and conducted a 6-days masterclass on floodproof and demountable architecture and self construction. Under the supervision of Nigerian architect Kunlé Adeyemi with Italian designer Paolo Cascone, 40 architecture and art students from various countries worked at Parc des Ateliers and on-site in the region on design solutions to inhabit flood-prone areas and adaptability to flood risks. The film Living with Rising Water and the Masterclass outcomes were presented in this exhibition for the Luma days. Following the masterclass exploration Waal brought international water specialists and architects of innovative constructions together with local experts in a public conference. In Colour Geographies we explore how design can have an active and transformative impact on the forces that shape contemporary color geographies. We map and explore a real context, the potential, the interaction, and the neglected design possibilities of color, at the scale of the city. In mapping the spatiality, identity and instrumentality of color in relation to the city, we hope to open up discussions on the interrelations and sensations and—most importantly—the possibilities for color in Eindhoven Over the entire course we will experiment and design with color. On-site installation of toilet in the community garden of Mediamatic, Amsterdam. NIMBY, an acronym for the expression ‘Not In My Back Yard’, is a term that applies to people who back a proposal but resist its implementation in a manner that might require personal sacrifice. The NIMBY toilet a dry toilet, which ferments urine with lactobacillus cultures and converts it into nutrients that contribute to fertile soil. The toilet developed by Henriette Waal aims to introduce ‘pee-cycling’ in community gardens. The dry toilet’s seat is a reinterpretation of the Sedia 1 chair designed by Enzo Mari in 1974, a self-assembly product intended as a tool for theoretical and practical engagement. The urine-fermenting dry toilet underpins the self-sufficiency of food-producing garden. Besides the fact that dry toilets save lots of water, they also offer an alternative for chemical fertilizer.

2014Hunnie Dutch Design Awards Eindhoven, Netherlands Project Hunnie (‘them’ in local slang) is a site-specific, participatory and performative action research focusing on the perception of the cultural landscape of De Bovenlanden, a characteristic expanse of peat meadow in the province of Utrecht (NL). Hunnie offers an innovative perspective on the relationship between man and nature, in contrast to the somewhat dogmatic and conservative approach of existing nature organizations. Through hands-on collaboration with local experts such as hunters, biologists, dieticians, survival guides and water engineers, participants are taken off the beaten track, which leads to new forms of embedded knowing. The project breaks with classic ethnographic research methods; in Hunnie the interventions are nature adventures, which act as conversation pieces. This increases the attention people devote to nature and reaches a more diverse public. This project was a finalist for the Dutch Design Awards. www.hunnie.nu Group

2020SOCIAL MATTER, SOCIAL DESIGN For good or bad, all design is social Book Valiz, Amsterdam Michael Kaethler and Jan Boelen Amsterdam, Netherlands www.valiz.nl/publicaties/social-matter-social-design Contribution: Doubts and dilemma’s - a dialogue between Social Design mentors p. 205-214 "Design is a social discipline. Once we acknowledge that the material and the social are entangled, any romantic illusion (or delusion) about design as mere form-giving is washed away. Once we recognize that things have presence and agency within the social systems we inhabit, no designer can be absolved from the consequences of their design. This is a strong book, inexorable in attributing designers responsibility, but also adamant in recognizing their growing power and their ability to wield objects as weapons for positive change." - Paola Antonelli, Senior Curator, Architecture & Design, The Museum of Modern Art, New York.

The book focuses on theories and practices related to the role of Design in terms of addressing, provoking and creating political discourse. Starting from traditional forms of protest, visual languages of resistance, to new forms of digital participation, this will help us to better understand the rituals, structures and meanings of design activism in history and the present, clarifying that design is intrinsically social and supremely political. And it shall help us to derive arguments and examples for the transformative potential of future design (and) activism.

2013SUSTAINIST DESIGN GUIDE How Sharing, Localism, Connectedness and Proportionality Are Creating a New Agenda for Social Design Book BIS Publishers Michiel Schwarz, Diana Krabbedam Amsterdam, Netherlands www.bispublishers.com/sustainist-design-guide.html Contribution: 1 out of 12 changemaking cases: Buitenbrouwerij (Outside brewery) Social innovation is experiencing a resurgence at a time when cultural boundaries are shifting. A wave of new social initiatives is coming into view worldwide, where millions of dedicated people are beginning to design different kinds of living environments that are more collaborative, more socially just, and more sustainable. This movement is what this Sustainist Design Guide is all about. As the authors say: It is no longer a matter of designing for society, but within it. This exploratory guide travels the new landscape of social design thinking and practice, viewed through the lens of sustainism - a perspective that is seen as a new ethos for design. The Sustainist Design Guide presents an agenda for social innovation, based on values such as sharing, connectedness, localism and proportionality, as well as sustainability. It challenges us to transform these and other sustainist qualities into design criteria and include them in our design briefs. The Sustainist Design Guide maps out best practices and explores how designers can become more socially and ecologically responsible. It opens the debate on what it means to be sustainist designers. Including 12 changemaking cases, ranging from urban farming and crowdsourced public architecture to collaborative crafts.

She also reports on various places around the world, such as New Orleans, Hamburg, Vietnam, New York and China, that are working with the Dutch on a new approach to the water landscape. As the most iconic element of the Netherlands, water has been represented in countless art works over the centuries. In this publication, art historian Maartje van den Heuvel reveals, in more than 125 works of art, the rich diversity of meanings the Dutch have attached to water and their waterways. These works of art represent the Netherlands' history with water in an evocative way and can serve to inspire the shaping of a changing world.
