Where there is man, there is fire. The fire we once learned to harness and which brought us progress is now burning like never before. The nighttime skies pale at artificial light and the natural cycle of day and night is disappearing at an alarming pace. Natural darkness now is only found at the very edges of our existence, where the absence of man can still be felt.

Control Freaks Man as Creator ‘Control Freaks’ arises from my interest in the relationship between man and animal – the animal that nowadays is being increasingly transformed into a product which must satisfy our needs. We breed animals on the basis of external characteristics which serve to provide us with the desired experience. The animal’s appearance is important for the ‘nature’ that we instinctively attribute to it. In this way we are able to personify animals. We have given domestic animals the identity which we like to see in them, an identity which suits us. Because of this pets are completely alienated from nature and have become a product. In many instances very little remains of the animal’s original outward appearance. With this project I want to hold up a mirror to people. It is my goal to elucidate man’s relationship to animals. I try to demonstrate the consequences our assumption of the role of creator has and to show the inadequacies with regard to responsibility and a long-term vision. Bald Breeds: The animals’ hairlessness was created in laboratories where the animals were bred for this specific quality. Originally this was done to aid animal experiments, but later this curious characteristic was used to market a perverse concept of beauty in pets. Animals are being bred and sold for this specific reason, their hairlessness. Hairlessness is a great disadvantage with regard to the health of the animals. Not only are they no longer able to stay warm, they are also much more vulnerable to infections and other ailments. Their coat – their natural protection against these things – has been taken from them, rendering them entirely dependent on man. These animals would not survive for long if they were not artificially protected and kept warm. This makes these animals extremely vulnerable.

The many physical ailments and disabilities of these animals are to be blamed on our self-interest and delusions of nature’s manipulability. The result of this are freaks, which we paradoxically consider beautiful creatures because we are blinded by our overestimation of ourselves.

2024BBA Gallery Berlin, Germany ABOUT THE EXHIBITION EXHIBITION 23.03. - 11.05.2024 LOCATION BBA GALLERY KÖPENICKER STR. 96 10179 BERLIN ARTIST TALK saturday 25 march 12:00 Vincent van Gaalen and his photographs of remote natural landscapes in Europe taken at night. Each monochromatic landscape has been constructed with a special layering technique which captures the three-dimensionality of nocturnal forms. Within the unusual aesthetic of the photographs, the viewer is able to imagine the colours that van Gaalen deliberately omits. In “Shades of the Night”, landscapes plunged in total darkness emphasise the primal power of nightfall. Under the light of the moon, only the contours of mountains, waterfalls or lakes are recognisable. In these dark sceneries, familiar worlds to us appear strangely removed, paving a way for new perspectives. Here, the fear of danger and threat which darkness usually instils in us is dispelled. Rather, these nighttime landscapes are images of security and refuge, where the vast expanse of blackness is a welcome respite from the hustle, bustle and glare of the urban cityscape. Van Gaalen introduces us to otherworldly visions of nocturnal nature which can rarely be experienced within dense population centres. Since the year 2020, the Dutch photographer Vincent van Gaalen has been travelling to the darkest areas of Europe equipped only with simple camera equipment, a tent and provisions. The landscapes he documents include places in Portugal, Spain, Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Czech Republic. Further trips are planned as part of this ongoing series, titled “Absence”. As light pollution in Europe is increasing by an average of 6.5% every year, the photographer captures the few remaining regions yet to be marred by the presence of artificial light and the industrial hand of humankind. Van Gaalen concentrates solely on landscapes: neither animals nor people appear in his works. As a portrayal of human absence, van Gaalen’s work calls for inner stillness and a gentle reflection regarding the impacts of our presence within our natural surroundings. In the context of the climate crisis, van Gaalen's photographs work as a counterpoint to the more violent forms of environmental protests. bba-gallery.com/exhibitions/vincent-van-gaalen-shades-of-the-night Solo

2023Shades of the Night BBA Gallery ( Berlijn, Germany BBA Gallery presents the debut solo exhibition of the Dutch artist Vincent van Gaalen: “Shades of the Night”. In the ongoing series “Absence”, van Gaalen's artistic photographs of natural landscapes in the light of the full moon emphasise the importance of our unique ecosystems, the preservation of which is evermore threatened. To raise awareness of our threatened environment, the exhibition opens on Saturday 23. March on the occasion of Earth Hour (from 20:30 - 21:30). Darkness is disappearing as light pollution within Europe is increasing at an average rate of 6.5% every year. Since 2020, the Dutch artist has been photographing unique panoramas with the simplest of equipment in the most remote areas of Europe. In these dark landscapes, unaffected by light pollution, familiar landscapes seem strangely remote. The landscapes he documents include places in Portugal, Spain, Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Czech Republic. www.bba-gallery.com/exhibitions/vincent-van-gaalen Solo

2023Editions BBA galery Berlijn, Germany Throughout history, art editions have been a means to utilise the power of image repetition for greater accessibility and availability. Now more than ever, it is imperative to provide the public with affordable contemporary art pieces. With this aim, this holiday season BBA presents BBA Editions, a group exhibition featuring a wide variety of artists represented by the gallery including some works from our previous Photography and Artist prize competitions. Editions have a rich global history with engraving in Europe and 13th century traditional woodcut printmaking in Japan and Asia. In response to the rising prominence of print mass-media in the 20th Century, many artists such as the German expressionists Ludwig Kirschner and Emil Nolde re-appropriated printmaking techniques to exert agency over the distribution and value of their works. To this day, print editions continue to be a prominent medium in the art world, as a crossroads between classic technique and contemporary accessibility. Contemporary editions have evolved from traditional printmaking to encompass a wide range of formats including photography. BBA Editions brings together all kinds of practices such as painting, sculptures, photography, digital art and more, to create a diverse assemblage of works that promote accessibility within the art world. People from all walks of life create art under a diverse human experience. It follows that the enriching opportunity to own a unique piece of art should be openly available. Single works can often feel costly for first time buyers. Editions with lower price points bridge this gap while also retaining the authenticity of the works. Each piece belonging to an edition carries within itself traces of the artist’s peculiarity and character. We want to inspire the next generation of collectors by celebrating the creatives of tomorrow. The editions are readily available to purchase in person at the gallery. To foster accessibility in the art market, BBA is soon launching a brand new online store through which the public can purchase works from editions. Editions provide the opportunity for a special Christmas gift for your art lover friends and family; with artworks that are both compact and affordable. www.bba-gallery.com/exhibitions/berlin/bba-editions Group

In Nederland werden in allerijl tijdelijke AZC’s gebouwd.
