Tune of the Hamlets Thinking about it, my grandmother never really spoke Dutch to me. She always used “Twents”: a dialect that was once considered part of the Dutch language is now officially called “Low Saxon”. By the end of 2018 “Low Saxon” has been acknowledged as a language. My grandmother has been speaking Twents, a dialect spoken in one of the 9 regions in the Netherlands that is now considered part of the Low Saxon language region. I asked myself if it was possible to compare are all those different dialects that fall under the term Low Saxon? Urkers and Drents, spoken in the regions of are technically regional dialects that derive from the Low Saxon language, but how can an outsider understand and hear this difference? ‘Tune of the Hamlets’ is an experiment where the voices of 5 different vocalists unite and overlap, each singing the same song, but in their own regional language. With the help of a mixer the viewer can decide which singers he/she can listen to. This act of comparison will highlight similarities and contrasts between the regional languages. The Low Saxon language area has 4.8 million speakers. It spreads from the North East part of the Netherlands all the way to the south of Denmark, with in-between the north of Germany.

Daniël Siegersma Anorak (2018) His family has no traditions. Yet, his region is full of them. Dutch artist Daniël Siegersma never really thought about this when he was growing up. It was the way it was. The decorations in his house were relics of his ancestors, mainly there to commemorate them as people. The relics belonged to a rural tradition, primarily practiced in the Dutch region of Twente and partly over the border with Germany. Still, seeing those relics as a kid made his curiosity about these rural manifestations rise. The relics itself became a form of latent traditions he tried to be involved in. In his installation ‘Anorak’ he asks: are we by default participants of our regional traditions or do we need to deserve it by action? And what does the majority of the country know about these regional traditions and is that important in a society with growing differences between city and countryside? The installations of Daniël Siegersma (1993, Netherlands) are metaphorical representations of major changes in society. He lives in The Hague.

2019Should I stay or should I go Tetem Enschede, Netherlands Het vertrekpunt van de tentoonstelling zijn vragen rond identiteit en migratie, bekeken vanuit het perspectief van de kunstenaars van de internationale community iii. De kunstenaars geven antwoorden op vragen als: Waarom ben je weggegaan uit je eigen land? Zou je terug willen en waarom? Wat maakt dat je in Nederland wil blijven? De antwoorden zijn gebruikt in diepte-interviews waarin levensangsten en verlangens als input zijn gebruikt voor drie nieuwe kunstinstallaties. In Tune of the Hamlets brengt Daniël Siegersma 5 Nedersaksische dialecten samen. Het Nedersaksisch is een officieel erkende taal die door 4,8 miljoen sprekers in Nederland en Duitsland wordt gesproken. Daniel’s kunstwerk is een sociaal interactief experiment waarin de dialecten zich in 1 lied verenigen en overlappen. De zangers zingen in het Drents, Gronings, Stellingwerfs, Twents en Urks. Jij kunt de installatie beïnvloeden door de verschillende dialecten te mixen en te bepalen naar welk dialect je wil luisteren. Grotto Zuid-Limburg, Netherlands ‘Grotto’(werktitel) (foto)documentatie Lourdesgrotten in Limburg door Rudi van Delden en Daniël Siegersma Projectomschrijving: Na de heiligverklaring van Bernadette Soubirous in 1933 werd Lourdes in Frankrijk een van ’s werelds meest bezochte pelgrim- soorden en een belangrijke plek voor religieus tourisme. Meer- dere malen verscheen Maria aan boerendochter Bernadette in een natuurlijke niche van de Massabielle grot nabij hij haar thuis- stand Lourdes. Een pelgrimstocht naar Lourdes was en is lang niet voor ieder- een weggelegd. Rond de eeuwwisseling, vlak na de heiligverklar- ing van Bernadette in 1933 nadat de paus een replica van de grot in de tuin van het Vaticaan had laten bouwen begonnen er mas- saal Lourdes grotten in Nederlandse, Belgische en Franse achter en voortuinen te verschijnen. Mensen begonnen met het bouwen van hun eigen plaatsen van toewijding, ditmaal dichterbij huis. De meeste van deze Lourdesgrotten waren kleiner, compacter en gemaakt van goedkope materialen. Op het hoogtepunt van de trend waren er zelfs prefab Lourdes grotten te koop in boeren- bond winkels. ‘Grotto’ heeft als doel het documenteren en in kaart brengen van de de Lourdesgrot rage. Hierbij ligt de focus niet alleen op de Lourdesgrotten zelf maar ook op bijzondere verhaallijnen die ont- staan zijn rondom de grotten. Zoals dat van de rotseerders, de cementrustiek en het verhaal van de grottenbouw pelgrim Berke Habets. Om zo een beeld te geven van de bijzondere manier waarop deze architectonische vorm van volksdevotie zicht heeft verspreid door het Nederlandse landschap en de excentrieke constructies die zich hebben gemanifesteerd als vreemde groeis- els in een plat landschap. ‘Grotto’ is naast de documentatie van religieus erfgoed een heemkundig onderzoek. Ons uitgangspunt is de Lourdesgrot waarvan uit we het netwerk achter de totstandkoming van de replica grotten gaan uitlichten. Hoe heeft deze vorm van volksdevotie, een uit de kluiten gewas- sen devotionalia, een massaproduct zich als een ware rage door Europa verspreidt. Hoe verhoudt een Lourdesgrot zicht tot een Tamagotchi of een Furby? Welke rol speelt ontkerkeling in het be- houd van de grotten en hoe ligt deze vorm van devotie met een hoog entertainment in lijn met dierentuinen en attractieparken waar de rotseerders van nu namaak rotspartijen optrekken.

2018Winnaar Steenbergen Stipendium Steenbergen Stipendium, Rotterdam (NL) Rotterdam, Netherlands Daniël Siegersma winnaar Steenbergen Stipendium. WINNAAR 2018 De jury van het Steenbergen Stipendium heeft unaniem gekozen voor Daniël Siegersma als winnaar van het Steenbergen Stipendium 2018. Voor het project Anorak verdiepte Siegersma zich als een betrokken antropoloog over de tradities en gebruiken van zijn geboortegrond Twente. Hij bleek in staat om een klassiek reportageonderwerp om te buigen naar een metaforische verbeelding over grote veranderingen in de maatschappij, over de steeds grotere verschillen tussen stad en platteland en het langzaam verdwijnen van plaatselijke gebruiken. Zijn presentatie is volledig in balans; alles klopt en elk onderdeel versterkt het andere. Siegersma toont zich niet alleen een fotograaf die het medium tot in de puntjes beheerst, hij begrijpt ook wat er leeft in de fotografie van vandaag. Een film, een attribuut, een boek – dat alles nam hij op in zijn presentatie, maar zonder de regie uit handen te geven of de controle over zijn installatie te verliezen. De extra onderdelen bekrachtigen juist zijn foto’s en dragen stuk voor stuk bij aan de kern van het verhaal dat hij wil vertellen. De jury is onder de indruk van de zelfverzekerde en professionele wijze waarop Siegersma zijn persoonlijke onderwerp beheerst. Hij had het lef om, ten behoeve van het geheel, elementen uit het verhaal weg te laten of op een minimale manier te laten zien. Zo boetseerde hij een presentatievorm die toegankelijk is en tegelijkertijd de magie en de betovering van zijn onderwerp in stand weet te houden.
