Where Hamelink’s early works were much more about fragility, her recent works are bold statements. With a hammer and wedges she finds the essence of what lies beneath the matter by splitting it open and showing its insides to us. To the artist the rough surface is like the inner world of the stone, harbouring invisible turmoil that can only meet the eye by the act of splitting. There is something within that stone wishing to come out and manifest itself. There is a distinct field of tension in which to work: the stone might crack in a very unpredictable manner, catalysing a new chain of events. OBEX no.2 is a cast of the negative space of two sides of a ruptured stone. A new element is formed of both the sides uniting the surfaces to an independently standing piece.

In the context of Manifesto 2040, Artist Badriah Hamelink designed a special meeting place for the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment as a focal point for the Sandmotor in Kijkduin. A pavilion where people can walk to from the adjacent beaches. Due to its proportions, this pavilion can be discerned from afar, but because of its shape and appearance it allsocoincides with its surroundings. The shape is taken directly from the environment and reflects the the slight slope of the dunes and sharp edges the wind blows in the sand. For the model Hamelink has chosen limestone as the material. A sedimentary rock that is created by the accumulation of material remains of marine organisms. For the actual pavilion, the sand from the sand motor can be used in a composite mixture, so that the color of the Pavilion matches the sand. As the sea advances and the sand is washed away at the foot of the pavilion, the pavilion will tilt around its central axis. The sand concrete will erode more and more into sand. Over time, all the sand from the sand motor washes away. The remnant of the pavilion remains as a streamlined stone on the seabed. In this way the pavilion finally coincides completely with the North Sea coast.

2025Giro d'Arte Tre Luci Pietrasanta, Italy Although Pietrasanta is known as the città d’arte, visitors rarely get the opportunity to meet real artists in their places of work. The idea for Giro d’Arte was born over an aperitivo in the piazza. A spontaneous conversation between friends blossomed into a community-wide event inspired by the voices on the Materially Speaking podcast. Materially Speaking has recorded the stories of more than 60 International artists on their popular podcast, and this year celebrates their five year anniversary. Check out the podcasts on any podcast player, or on the episode page where you’ll also find photographs of the artists’ work. Giro d’Arte offers a rare opportunity to expand this community by welcoming guests to studios, each one will open for a 2–3 hour window during the weekend of May 24–25th. materiallyspeaking.com/giro-darte Group

2018Beeld Reflecties Catalog Jeroen Damen, Jaap Nijstad, Sya van 't Vlie, Alex de Vries Amsterdam, Netherlands www.badriah-hamelink.com/100-years-of-dutch-sculptors-society-nkvb/ Curator Jeroen Damen selected seven images from the past 100 years of sculpture history that were given the label "signal image" because they make a significant change in sculpture visible and 100 sculptors from the Dutch Circle were prepared to be inspired by these signal images. The new images will be shown in the exhibition as a counterpart to the signal images. The selection of the signal images focused on turning moments in separation and quality, regardless of whether the maker was ever a member of the Circle. The Dutch Circle of Sculptors also shows its openness to the outside world. The circle does not only focus on the work of its own members, but actively thinks about what it observes in sculpture. The Circle does not conduct its own sculptural program and does not occupy a preferred position, but rather bases its admission policy on diversity and on quality. These two criteria now get the chance to manifest themselves.

How can the city not only offer more space for water and nature in the future, but also for people? Which interventions are possible to improve living together in public spaces? More than twenty visual artists, spatial designers and social change experts and the Haags Jongerenatelier started a joint search with these questions. The result of their work is the MEETING exhibition that can be seen in the summer of 2017 in Pulchri Studio in The Hague. In this catalog an overview of the work, introduced by initiator Hans Leeflang, and provided with a context with essays on (in) equality, new assignments, sustainable development and playing children.
